Mar 12 2013: Shane, you have just influenced 150 teenagers from Wellsburg, West Virgina.
Thank You
However, after showing this video and having each student write about bullying and then having them say something positive about each student in the classroom. I had two or three papers that actually bullied in their positive comment papers. How do I (we)(teachers) stop this??? It broke my heart to read thier words. One comment was racist, the others were just hurtful. I mean after watching and writing about bullying and its effects. How does it persist?
I watched this yesterday for the first time and i immediately changed my lesson plans for today.
My lesson plan:
1. Watch video
2. Allow students to choose a writing prompt
i was bullied...........how when why
i bullied ..................how when why
nobody knows that i want to be...........
what labels have you been given by yourself or others.........how do they make you feel
3. give a list of everyone's name in the class and ask the students to write one honest, true, positive statement about each name on the list and turn it in.
I plan to compile this list for each student
Thank you Shane for giving me to courage to cry in front of my students.
Apr 29 2012: I would, in honor of Randy Pausch, give the last lecture I give my students every year. I would show tedsters that this profession of teaching is not only here to educate but is here to motivate, empower, and intrigue students to find their own passion and persue.
Apr 2 2012: TED is one of the driving forces behind my classroom.
1a. I embed every video I can into my lessons.
1b. I mimic the great TED speakers in ways I address and lecture my class. (The other day a student said I sounded like rives the way I explained the logarithmic functions . ;) it was my goal )
1c. I am trying to convince my school to allow me to run a TED class as an elective that will focus on research, world issues, technology, and presentation skills. (no success yet we are way to understaffed and over budget)
2. Because TED to me is being able to attend mental development classes year round. TED is surrounding myself with like minded individuals that want more for themselves and the world. TED is the future, or at least what i want the future to look like.
3.EVERY SINGLE INDUSTRY. I show TED to every single student I have. I expose them to others very educated thoughts. And by exposing them, their thoughts and actions can be influenced by TED. Dan Pink's Motivation talk is one of my favorite talks to get students discussing the future of business and management. Students love discussing interesting presentations and applying the ideas to themselves or future endeavors.
*Only one small problem-You tube videos can not play in my school.*l
If you created everything, and truly gave us "free will" to live how we deem appropriate along with a few guidelines (rules) you gave us along the way.
Now assuming, there is no other dimensions, no multiple universes, just this one, just this one time.
WHY?
And I ask why because why create us at all. What was the purpose. Are we pets for your enjoyment. Are we just your entertainment, are we the ants making tunnels behind the glass.
Mar 8 2012: Thank you. WOW
I use TED and videos like this to inspire and motivate my students to pursue the fields of math, engineering, technology, and science. This video was so incredible, I have many students speechless right now. However, students and I were focused on the usefulness these helicopters could have in the military. ie (tracking groups of enemies or friends, delivering payloads of information or weapons....).
Sep 2 2011: My passion, is helping my high school students find theirs. I do this by connecting and relating with my students. I introduce them to career paths they didn't know existed. I also expose them to every amazing TED video I have ever seen and encourage them to find videos to show in class.
TEDCred score: +2.60 TEDCred reflects your contribution to the TED community.
A comment on Talk: Sanjay Dastoor: A skateboard, with a boost
Skate boarders have always normally been fit and leave no carbon footprint. Now? lol
I still want one though.
