Geoffrey Canada: Our failing schools. Enough is enough!
Great point! Schools definitely need a new model. Their present ubiquity makes it nearly impossible to improve, since many times substandards can easily escape detection. A structural change just like the example of your video taped class or the flipped classroom models of moocs might be one structural change that could redress some of the current shortcomings.

I heard something about a neoclassical theory that schools have to look the same, feel the same and act the same to be identified as schools regardless of whatever rot may or may not exist in it. So schools worldwide portray the same look and feel and a school or classroom anywhere in the world is instantly recognizable regardless of socioeconomic culture. I dont think a change can come through that model except if the model of 'schools' itself is changed. And I see a new model emerging - online, moocs, - Khan, Coursera etc. I believe such a model might incorporate the changes that we so need in education.
