Jonathan Haidt: The moral roots of liberals and conservatives
Sadly, the broad brush statement is contradicted by the makeup in the audience in the video. The audience is made up largely of academicians, open minded innovators and progressive thinkers. Conservatives are not a homogeneous group; they are made up of different factions of bright strategic thinkers, moderates, religious fundamentalists, and the purely baseline ignorant. Academicians tend to process empirical data and drawn conclusions commensurate with the findings. Many the neo-cons presenting on Youtube start with a belief and then seek selective data to support their viewpoint. Both claim objectivity, but one side operates more from examination and the other from moral beliefs.

What does it mean to be human?
Without risking the conflation of the species of homo sapien: a concoction of intellectualism, emotions, and physical dexterity, I would prefer to address the question of what does it mean to be humane. As a veteran of domestic and foreign wars, I have seen first hand what it looks like to be inhumane in one moment and compassionate a moment later. The spectrum of humanity ranging from reactionary destruction to artistic creativity blinds us to the magnificence and complexity of the question.

Rita Pierson: Every kid needs a champion
A shift in policy and structure will embrace that education is less about teaching but more about learning. In a meaningful educational cultural environment, both the teacher and the student learn; it is a mutually rewarding pact of achievement. Both are inspired and encourage to go further in their mutual exploration. At a late 1990's national NEA conference, one speaker expressed the failure of the assembly-line/mass-production process prevalent in our public schools. However little has changed structurally over the last decade. The No Child Left Behind program has only deepened a failing paradigm. Today, a 70% acceptance (the national average graduation rate) on a manufacturing assembly line would never be tolerated. The D.C. per pupil expenditure of $30K is just another indication of a poor structural design. We must exercise the courage to first acknowledge that the current system is getting the results it is designed to deliver -- a clear separation from the privileged and the underprivileged. Only then can we embark on a redesign to deliver a 90% quality outcome.
