About Roger

Fell in love with math at the age of 16. Pursued her relentlessly for two years in one of the most challenging relationships of my life. Casually enjoyed her for five years while in college, then left her for a corporate career at 23 years old. In 2007, I fell in love with teaching. In 2008, I left a successful career in marketing and sales to pursue a relationship with teaching. It has been a wild ride since then. Today, I am in a wonderful relationship with teaching that I wouldn't trade for anything. I am happy.

An idea worth spreading

Don't simply give students information. Help students discover it for themselves. Humans are already wired to learn. Leverage this wiring and simply create, inspire, and sustain the environment within which students can explore, discover, experiment, and innovate. Then stand back and give them time, you will be surprised at what giving students an extra minute can produce.

I'm passionate about

Helping students become passionate learners and active pursuers of their interests and talents. Helping students understand and appreciate the value of mathematics, no matter what career they choose.

Talk to me about

My TED story

I found TED many years ago through talks that people shared via Twitter. After watching several talks I began to use some of them in leadership development workshops to support my topics. However, it wasn't until last year that I truly understood the value of TED. In May of 2012, my friend and former TED speaker, Cesar Kuriyama, invited me to join him in attending TEDxEast 2012. It was there that I learned what the TED experience is about. Watching the videos is great, but there is nothing like a day of talks and stimulating conversation with like-minded people that are passionate, driven, and appreciate the value of learning about new ideas. Since that TEDxEast event, I have attended several others and made friends that I am close with today. I look forward to continuing my TED story in the years to come.
