Dan Pallotta: The way we think about charity is dead wrong
Generally I agree on the ideas that TED gives, but not this one. I don't think advertising can increase the public donation from 2% to 3% GDP. Basically, the majority public people only donate what they feel they can afford to donate. If I give $50 to the breast cancer foundation this time, I will very likely to give less, maybe $20, to the lung cancer foundation in the next fundraising event. Different charities compete money from one large pool. In order to solve the shortage, it is to increase the size of the pool, to raise the awareness of importance of charities and get more people to donate instead of spending on what we want rather than what we really need. Many people hardly donate because they believe they have paid enough taxes and it is the government duty to solve the problems, not individuals'. That is the root of the problem I think.
