Lawrence Lessig: We the People, and the Republic we must reclaim
I live in Australia, and belong to a political party, and believe me a compulsory voting system is not right. All it does is cause uninterested and uninformed people to vote for whoever takes their fancy! It effectively plays to the status quo leadership on both sides of politics and stifles fundamental challenge. I agree though that more of us who do care should do more. Incidentally, I support the use of an independent ombudsman to verify what elected representatives have achieved before the next election, also to ban political advertising beyond policies announcement and to ban corporate political donations. None of this reform has happened yet in Australia!

Has the time come for the U.S Second Amendment to be repealed or amended?
Excellent topic! The issue is the USA has a disproportionate number of killings using firearms than other any developed country. There must be correlation between the ease of access of high powered weapons and the killing statistics. Surely it can't be "cultural" can it?? Violent movies and so on are available everywhere! Many countries have gun laws that restrict and control the types of guns people can own and how those guns are stored and the users trained. Surely it would do no harm for the US to take a look at what happens elsewhere. If this means that the precious 2nd amendment needs to be amended or abolished and or replaced by some sort of stricter control over firearm ownership then good! The outcome that any civilised country should seek is the safety of its people and it's laws should be aligned accordingly. The days when cowboys roamed the range shooting at everyone else have passed, time to move on America!
