Colin Powell: Kids need structure
You don't care. I do. You can separate the evil a man has done in his life from education. I see a man's ideas in the context of character and history. You might send your children to daycare with Rasputin or Caligula because you liked a speech they gave or their hairstyle, I on the other hand am wary of any man seeking to influence something so vitally important who has killed a million people. Don't fool yourself. When Powell talks about "structure" he means HIS structure. When he talks about structure, he means obedience to his structure, his will and his ambitions. He intends to define right and wrong. He intends to shape behavior and thought. Moreover, he doesn't want to be a subject of this. He wants to be the master. He wants to be in charge. What this man does with influence and power is history. He has a six digit body count. Ignoring this history is foolish no matter how much you like his words. He is a wolf. He considers you a sheep. Wolves eat sheep. It is their nature. Beware.

Colin Powell: Kids need structure
Have you ever talked with someone from the Chinese system? Do you understand how it works? It is not as glorious as you suggest. I have. I have hired dozens of Chinese engineers as well. Most of them have a very low capacity to think outside the box or invent. Neither you or virtually anyone else in the Western world would want to live in the society their building. Life is much more than being able to spit back facts for some beady eyed instructor or standing up straight, or jumping at the beck and call of guys like Powell.

Colin Powell
Colin Powell has zero credibility to deliver this message. He seems to want all of the children to become automatons willing to salute and then blindly obey his orders. He had an army of kids just like this at his command once. He killed thousands and wounded hundreds of thousands of them based on the pack lies he told. One of the first rules of deciphering political lies is whenever anything is "for the children", you are either going to have your pocket picked or your liberties confiscated, or both. He wants obedient workers and cannon fodder. And maybe to rebuild his tarnished image.

Ronny Edry: Israel and Iran: A love story?
What a disastrous election. Israel has once again elected a hawkish, right wing, Zionist government. Although the other shoe has yet to drop, we can look forward to an even more war-like Israel with no intention of peace. I am stunned that they have doubled down on apartheid, oppression, war and the status quo. I guess that I knew better, but I just can't believe that this is what they really want...never ending war, never ending hate, never ending fear and never ending oppression. It is a whole new world folks. They are nuts. It is almost a death wish. It almost looks to me like this talk is little more than Israeli propaganda.

Ronny Edry: Israel and Iran: A love story?
Piffle. My characterization of both Netanyahu and Bennett is on an absolute not relative scale of Politics and morality and is based on their actions. On this absolute scale both Bennett and Netanyahu are right wing I agree that Netanyahu and Bennett are not right wing by Israeli standards. However, this is akin to being a moderate at a Klan rally. That Israel, tragically, has a boatload of politicians even more nutty and warlike than these two and that the oppressive and aggressive policies that are daily fare for the present Israeli government are considered "moderate" by Israeli standards only proves the point that Israel seems to be hopelessly flawed and getting worse. 63% is a high rate of participation in an election. I do not have the space here to teach you statistics, but a 63% sampling of a population this size gives 99.99%+ confidence that all Israeli are in agreement politically with the 63%. In fact, we know exactly what they think. Israel is for the ruinous policies of Netanyahu and Bennett....or worse because, as you suggest, Netanyahu and Bennett stunningly, don't even represent the worst of Israeli political thinking. The only thing that Israel has gone "all-in" on is Palestine. Of course any proposal that allows Zionist hegemony in Palestine is rejected. To see the silliness of this, ask yourself if the Zionist would agree to reverse the terms. The fact remains that the Zionist State was built by seizing the land of the Palestinians. The dreck they teach your little kids, and I assume you as well, is just flat wrong. You are the aggressor. Your country may eventually do as your Founders schemed, drive the Palestinians from their land and then move on to extend your oppression to Eretz Israel and exterminating those who live there as you have the Palestinians, but you will always be morally wrong. That others have participated in these crimes or that you personally have been silent does not change your shame or that of Zionism

"Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all - the apathy of human beings." - Helen Keller May the suffering of the Palestinians move us to action, may we lift our voices on their behalf when they cannot.

Ronny Edry: Israel and Iran: A love story?
You all do understand what is going on right now in Israel politically, don't you? You do understand where the concern about the sincerity or reality of this talk is coming from, right? If you don't then please consider the following. Israel has an election coming up on Jan 22, 2013, a few weeks away. Right now the polls show that Netanyahu and his party leading. Netanyahu is very hawkish militarily and has already demonstrated over decades that he supports Palestinian oppression and a continuation of the Palestinian land seizure ("settlements"). However, the candidate Naftali Bennett of the Jewish Home party is gaining on him. Bennet's position is even more hawkish, outlandish and downright scary than that of Netanyahu. To wit, that the Jews have a God given right to Eretz Israel. So that you can fully appreciate how dangerously unbalanced this position is please consider what he means by Eretz Israel. The boundaries of Eretz Israel are the Judaic claim of land the Jews purport that God gave them in their scripture. The boundaries of this land go from the Nile river in Egypt to the Euphrates river in Iraq include the Sinai peninsula (now Egypt), some of Turkey, all of Lebanon, most of Syria, all of Jordan, much of Iraq including most of the oil fields, all of Kuwait and their oil fields and part of Saudi Arabia again including some oil fields. The strongest support in Israel for Bennett is among younger Israeli. Since Israel's government is split between the various parties by vote, the two major influences in the new Israeli government will be Netanyahu's Likud-Beitenu coalition that will likely survive and Bennett's Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) party. Thus, the actual government in Israel is likely to be even more right-wing and more aggressive. Israel's youth are moving strongly to the right and the new twist to expand Israel to Eretz Israel is a frightening new dimension to what is already a tragedy.

Ronny Edry: Israel and Iran: A love story?
Nicole, I think that this gesture by Ronny Edry is nice. Late and small, but nice. What I said is precisely true. Israel is a grave threat to world peace. It is the only nuclear armed country in the middle east (heavily so) with the launch vehicles and aircraft capable of delivering them. Further, Israel possesses a highly asymmetric biological and chemical weapon arsenal as well. It is actively engaged in a decades old policy of destruction of the Palestinian people and have forced a great number of them into what is essentially an open air prison: Gaza. It is systematically stealing the land of the Palestinians with its "settlements". All of these things are highly destabilizing given that their many neighbors object to this vigorously. Moreover, Israel has an active program of assassinating Iranian scientists which is overt aggression with a large middle-eastern power, Iran, and is beating the drum of war with the United States. Additionally, Israel is likely engaged in cyber-warfare with Iran as well. All of these are direct acts of aggression. A large scale attack by Israel with any one of several middle eastern countries, especially Iran, could trigger a larger war including Russia, the EU, Turkey, Pakistan and the US. All of these are nuclear powers with considerable other military resources. Israel is a grave threat to world peace whether or not you agree with them. I am stating the obvious. I'm all for fanning the flame of love and peace, but perhaps we might want to remove the fuel of aggression and oppression that Israel has historically heaped on the fire of hate. So I do hope Israel has changed its ways. It is here that arrogance, grudges and anger lie together in the same bed.
