Mars et Avril Inc. (Montreal, Canada)
2007 - 2012 (5 years)
"Mars et Avril" is a Canadian science fiction film starring Jacques Languirand, Caroline Dhavernas, Paul Ahmarani and Robert Lepage. This is my first feature film, an adaptation of my two eponymous graphic novels published by Sid Lee & la Pasteque. Belgian comic book artist Francois Schuiten ("The Golden Compass", "Mr. Nobody") was the production designer, former ILM Senior Compositor Carlos Monzon ("Avatar", "Transformers", "Star Trek") worked as VFX supervisor, and Oscar-nominated Benoit Charest ("The Triplets of Belleville") composed the original score. The film was financed by Telefilm Canada, SODEC, Les Productions du 8e Art and the Harold Greenberg Fund, and is distributed in Canada by Alliance Vivafilm.

Cirque du Soleil / Sid Lee (Montreal, Canada)
2002 - 2007 (5 years)
In 2002, I received a grant from the Sid Lee Agency for the quality of my portfolio. In the years that followed, I worked with this agency (for which I actually found the name), especially for Cirque du Soleil.
Cirque du Soleil is an internationally acclaimed Canadian entertainment company, based in Montreal, self-described as a "dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment." My collaboration with Cirque dates back to 2002, when I was recruited by the happening local advertising agency Sid Lee. I found the name for Guy Laliberte's "ONE DROP" Foundation, as well as for three Cirque du Soleil shows: "Zumanity", "KA" and "Corteo". I worked closely with the directors (Rene-Richard Cyr, Robert Lepage, Daniele Finzi Pasca) and helped create the award-winning advertising campaigns for these shows. Among other projects, I directed the TV spots for "KA", "DELIRIUM" and "Saltimbanco", as well as a documentary about Cirque's 20th anniversary. In 2007, I also wrote and designed a Cirque show yet to be produced called "Space Adventures".

Problems are hidden opportunities and constraints can actually boost creativity. If you have some crazy ideas in your mind, and that people tell you that it's impossible to make, well, that's an even better reason to want to do it, because people have a tendency to see the problems rather than the final result, whereas if you start to deal with problems as being your allies rather than your opponents, life will start to dance with you in the most amazing way.
In his film "Mars et Avril", Martin Villeneuve brings his sci-fi romance graphic novels to glorious life.
The musician who plays otherworldly music on one-of-a-kind instruments... the genius who designs the instruments inspired by a woman's body... and the photographer they both love. An old-fashioned love triangle is at the heart of "Mars et Avril", a bold and dreamy sci-fi set in a future Montreal where the Champ-de-Mars subway line takes you right out to Mars.
Martin Villeneuve made the film based on his two graphic novels, also titled "Mars et Avril". Villeneuve is the former artistic director for the ad agency that works with Cirque du Soleil, creating ad campaigns for shows like "Zumanity", "KA" and "Corteo". He's now working with comic book masters Benoit Sokal and Francois Schuiten on a new script, "Aquarica".
"An extraordinary universe that's remarkably inventive and impossible to forget."
