11 hours ago: No I am admitting nothing of the sort. I am stating that the basis of your argument is with data that is inconclusive and that the entire idea of counting calories is a complete and utter joke! Consider that link the lead in to my argument, sorry for the confusion Anne. While I do not agree with the calorie count based on the link I gave you it is far more accurate than what they are trying to do in school.

By your own observation there are kids who are relying on their school lunch for the larger count of their daily nutrition. So how is it fair to say that 850 is a good number? Let’s also take into account that while in school it is the most active time of their day and based on the numbers from the site I linked to the count again does not add up. If we could be sure the most valuable meal of the day (breakfast) was being prepared with nutrition in mind then your argument might (by a small fraction) have some weight. No matter how you add it up 850 is an ignorant count when the nutrition of our kids is at stake and to say that many kids don’t exercise is to say shame on their parents and shame on those that are supposed to be educating them! Let’s not set here and shame them by starving them based on some idiot’s idea of food value!

12 hours ago: Here is the real problem, the FDA are the ones that coined the magic caloric intake number of 2000 calories a day, and you can ask any nutrition expert and they will all tell you that there is absolutely NO logic in where they got this figure.

If you keep up with past events involving the FDA it becomes clear real fast that this entity is not someone that can be trusted as an authority on the matters they were assigned to rule on, both food and drug related and don’t even get me started on the abortion they call the farm bill or their failed attempt with food safety modernization act.

They have been wrong more times than they ever were right and they have cleared things for consumption in the past that are not even safe for animal intake. Far be it for me to try and convince anyone here that the numbers are all wrong but you believe the wrong facts (which I find amazing). If you want to go on in life believing that your government really has your best interest at heart so be it but don’t set here and ridicule me when you are misinformed about what is and is not factual.

17 hours ago: Blanche Lincoln may have sponsored it but Mrs. Obama is championing it and no it is not just her, it is the overall idea that once again politicians come together to tell us what is good for us and what is not based on what facts? So what you are saying here is that it is OK to standardize the nutrition of ALL kids. Sorry but I refuse to stand by and let some politician hurt my ACTIVE kids because some fat kid 1000 miles away needs to go on a diet. They need to get the crap out of school lunches, the low food value items just to save a buck stuff and get back to REAL food! I propose asking parents if they are willing to pay more so their kids can eat a healthy lunch which only the lame would not. Of course there are those who cannot afford it and that is where we must all step up and help. Don’t generalize my kids health needs who are active based on some kid 1000 miles away and call it habitual (SAY WHAT?).

I vote we get government out of things they are clueless to understand and also to stop generalizing everyone into categories because as usual they only go far enough to make it look like they did a good thing and only small groups actually benefit from their actions.

By the way if what you say is true and I do not doubt it is and the school lunch is the most nutritious meal of the day for them. Well I go news for you, after Lincoln and Obama get through with it that will not be a fact you can push around anymore!

18 hours ago: This is why we should leave these things to the experts. Anne, please look at the figures from the page I am linking to and you may want to reconsider what you believe to be true. 850 calories does not fit into ANY healthy diet and can lead to some major health issues. I partner with the idea to eat healthy and that includes a well rounded diet of the food groups.

  • A reply on Talk: Alex Laskey: How behavioral science can lower your energy bill

Jun 6 2013: I don't agree with the spread the wealth theory. I don't believe it is fair that those that can must pay for those that do nothing. However I do not agree that those that can should take it off the backs of those of us who try hard only to break even.

There are two evils at work here and both will win out over common sense. Greed and power mongers, both of which control the world as it is and until the masses pull together and do something for themselves nothing is going to change and the Earth is going to complete the 6th extinction without us! The good news is the ones that will survive will not be in either of these two groups!

THIS SHOULD BE A TED TALK!

Jun 5 2013: I am skeptical that any power company is really on board with customers that make them rich by doing anything really to help people pay them less. By his own words, power companies are rewarded by helping their customers waste energy, so really who is he partnering with and are they really on board? What I would like to see is more people look to the sky and develop resources to make it affordable for people to power their homes with solar and wind (without the power companies help or blessing). We should not be waiting on the power companies to adopt solar and wind because not only is this well into the future before that would be a reality where enough was being done to make a difference. Even so if and when it does become a reality the consumer is going to pay through the teeth for it. I say install solar and wind power on your home directly, learn how it works, save a ton of cash and really help solve the problem!

A comment on Talk: Hendrik Poinar: Bring back the woolly mammoth!

May 30 2013: There is so much of our world we do not understand and even less that we can control. Yet we want to mess with ideas like this when we cannot possible understand the complexity of it. We are just now understanding the power and influence micro-organisms have on us and our world but we have a long way to go to really see how these interactions play out in the bigger picture. I would think that educated people would realize the implication of such a thing goes far past our ability to understand what impact it could have. While the idea is fascinating I think to even have this talk is arrogant and self-serving and that is not even taking this animals being into account which I have not heard one thing about and should be the first concern! Let’s strongly consider what we cannot see before we get ahead of ourselves…

Personally I think the idea is wrong, natural selection is in place for a reason and the only species on this planet that is in its arrogance, been unwittingly unraveling this planet now wants to consider themselves the creator. Why don’t we spend our time and intellect solving the problems that exist today? Cure cancer or something as basic as global starvation and then I might change my view!!!

May 28 2013: I was on board with him until he said we needed to look at what Michelle Obama wants to do. I am sorry but taking a kid who is active (or should be active) and reducing the calorie intake to 850 is NOT the answer. In fact an active kid needs a minimum of 2000 calories and some as high as 5000 calories to function properly. It is a proven medical fact that we need calories and it should be more about the quality of the food rather than some number. The problem I see with this picture is there is too much generalization going on. Yes the obese kid needs to go on a diet but what about the rest of the kids who are in sports and being active? So what we model lunches to safe the fat kid and starve the active ones? Let’s put the diet in the hands of health experts and leave politicians out of it who are only looking at this as a way to win votes and don’t have a clue about what they are doing. Two wrongs do not make a right and following the idea that Mrs. Obama is somehow knowledgeable in nutrition is preposterous, nowhere in her bio did I read where she is educated in any way with nutrition and what she has done in schools so far is proof of that!
