About Julia

Bio

My outlook on life is a simple one: I LOVE IT!

I am not Mother T, or a perfect person by any means. I am just a regular person trying to make a difference. I am a mother, wife, artist, chef, writer, and now a self-proclaimed spreader-of-gratitude. Life has been a great teacher, and this student is eager to learn its many lessons. It is has been said that, “Wisdom, is knowing the right path to take, and Integrity, is taking it”. If you explored my journey in this life, it would be riddled with abrupt high and lows, and many bends and forks in the road. I embrace my struggles and triumphs with gratitude, for a plant grows deep roots when it has to search for water. I often remind myself of one of life’s simple rules….the golden one. Every being has great value, no matter their station in life. Everyone has a story to tell. My artwork tells mine

I am a social creature, born with an innate fascination as to how and why people do the things we do. Meditative and contemplative, I am often awestruck by the beauty and power of Mother-Nature. I am on an exploration of the things in life that move me, and those that simply make me smile, or curious. My experiences have helped shape who I am as an artist and a person, but they alone do not define me. My art is in a constant state of evolution, as am I.

I have had the good fortune to travel to many places around the globe, and hope to continue to see more of this wondrous world. Scotland, the birthplace of golf, is my second home.

I am truly grateful for the many gifts I have been given. I find myself in daily pursuit of the answers to these questions: How can I become my best me, and what can I do to help my fellow man? I recently helped to launch a not-for-profit & website www.SpreadingGratitudeRocks.com Our "soul" mission is to spread global gratitude. Living life through the lens of a grateful heart can transform the world.

Like the melody and words of a love song….the colors and images in art are meant to touch you in a way that a physical hand cannot. Falling in love is something you feel, but often you do not know why. Similarly, when we fall in love with a painting it is often simply just “because”. It’s color and mood may awaken or inspire something intangible within us.

I think we are meant to surround ourselves with the things we love. This includes not only people but our environment. It is for this reason that I often paint in a vibrant color pallet….it feels good……it feels “alive”. Life is meant to be lived, and I intend to live mine. With child-like eagerness, I embrace that mantra. Buckle-up, dream big…..and enjoy the ride.

With Gratitude, Julia Rose

(1) Spreading Gratitude Rocks is a new not-for-profit whose “soul” mission is to spread global gratitude. We want to help make the world a happier place for all of us. There is no donate button on our site. It is simply a free source of inspiration & information. I would humbly request that you sign up for the free 21-day habit of gratitude challenge. Science suggests it takes 21 day to develop a new habit. Doing so does not suggest that you are ungracious. To the contrary, it is a show of support for the importance of this often forgotten virtue.

My TED story

Please visit our site, & consider taking the challenge. There truly is no downside. I suggest downloading our free bedside journal & maybe printing some tokens-of-gratitude to pass out during your journey. You will not only help us accomplish our goal of spreading global gratitude, but it will enhance you own journey. Another wonderful tool is using a coin or gratitude rock that you find in your garden as a physical object to help you focus on daily gratitude.Watch the short for our upcoming educational documentary "Making Man…Kind" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsOHF8BhqgU

Education is the answer to all of our problems
Thank you Mike! And I will check out David's work. Maybe we can speak to him for our film. To me it makes logical sense that any thing we practice…can potentially become habit. That is why my journey this past year started with founding SpreadingGratitudeRocks.com where we encourage people to create a habit of gratitude with a 21-day habit of gratitude challenge. I realize that there is no actual evidence that a new habit can develop in 21 days….but it a good start. : )

Education is the answer to all of our problems
I agree Mike. What if we made "kindness education" (things like gratitude, compassion, forgiveness) a part of mainstream curriculum? I have been working passionately on this idea the past year and just released a short to the upcoming feature film, "Making Man…Kind": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsOHF8BhqgU It is my belief that we (human-kind) all have kindness within us, and that to be kind (compassionate, grateful etc) is a choice…and possibly a skill we can develop. As much as technology in some ways can keep us from making personal contact with each other…it can also be used to connect us…as we are right now. Having grown up with technology, perhaps the millennium generation can be encouraged to choose to use it to spread a positive message. This is my hope; that we can empower youthful change-makers to help redesign education so that learning to COUNT…it's just numbers & mathematics.

David Steindl-Rast: Want to be happy? Be grateful
LOVE Brother David!!! The message he wrote for Louie Schwartzberg's TED video, "Nature, Beauty & Gratitude" was the most PERFECT message about gratitude that I have ever seen. I hope to include his wisdom in our upcoming feature educational documentary "Making Man…Kind". Here is the prelude for our film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsOHF8BhqgU It is an explorative journey of the virtues of kindness. Engaging youthful change-makers to use technology & social media to spread the spirit of global gratitude & kindness. I welcome your thoughts and comments.

Louie Schwartzberg: Nature. Beauty. Gratitude.
I absolutely LOVE this video. Not only is it a visual buffet with the sunning time-lapse photography, but the message is so very beautiful as well. BRAVO! I love the purity of the old mans voice. We have this & a shorter version (where it begins with the old man) posted on the website of the not-for-profit I helped to "found" SpreadingGratitudeRocks.com This is my FAVORITE gratitude video by far. Another that I like (but not at all the same visual appeal) is one about "The Golden Rule". Shows how something like 30 religions all use the golden rule. I personally never can understand how people kill each other in the name of religion. To me it is just a matter of semantics. Why let that bother you? I am actually here on TED looking for help with a film that we are going to make. It is called, "Making Man...kind". We will be interviewing people (ala Secret style) regarding their ideas on gratitude, compassion, kindness, generosity, empathy & other traits that make man...kind. Unlike The Secret we have purely charitable intent. Similar to "The Golden Rule" it will show that gratitude is a universal language. "If you never learn the language of gratitude, you will never be on speaking terms with happiness." We welcome any & all help with our mission. We will be applying for the TED prize in the spring. As the affiliations here alone could make all our lofty goals a reality. We are grassroots, but for what we lack in funding, we make up for in ideas, passion & tenacity.
