Jacek Utko: Can design save newspapers?
I guess it could work for you the same as in small European countries I've been working. Some guy with knowledge comes from outside and trains his disciples, and then they train the others. After few years you can have a visual culture in your company (or even country) established.

Christine, indeed Polish poster design school from 60s and 70s is well known everywhere I guess. I love it and I hope I am influenced by this too. But believe me none of this you could find in newspapers for years. Advertisement and maybe 2 magazines were the only area where this 'spirit' was somehow noticed. Polish press looks good for last 5 years only. And it's not because of rich tradition but because of big market pressure and competition.

I said: printed papers will NOT survive. Maybe some niche, non-daily products will be still printed in the future, as a luxury reminder of old times. But the rethinking process I described (very briefly - 6 minutes!) can apply to anything. Maybe some next redesign process will lead us to an answer that there's no room for printed newspapers. More likely newspapers will survive only as brands on the web (or mobile phones). But forget about Western perspective: I guess half of the world can still enjoy newspapers for years. And still make money. What happened in Central Europe may happen in China, India, middle-east....... They can also double circulation after redesign :-)

And by the way, Poland is smaller by population than Italy, UK, Spain. By economic power is smaller than majority of old EU members. The poorest regions of EU are in Poland. But I am glad to hear Poland's advocates. It is definitely developing very fast. But few years ago I had leave Poland to learn about modern visual journalism and design. There was no tradition or inspiring examples here. I had to try harder. And all these talented guys from Latin America or Russia had to try harder too.

I am based in Warsaw and I work a lot in Baltic states. Estonia population - 1,3 million is like one city in Europe. And when they started it was still Soviet Union! And this country produced word's best newspaper. Working with just few persons staff, very limited budgets for illustrations, infographics. Do you know how many people work in graphic departments in typical western newspapers? Even 10 times more. In our Russian paper they just cut their ONLY infographic artist - cost savings. When in NYTimes they had about 30 guys? And Russia still won some Malofiej Awards for graphics. So I want you to understand the scale, the difference. When you everyday make something out of nothing in just few hours. Our poster style of covers is because we don't use often news photos, we avoid photo agencies too. Our only asset is an idea. So my message was that you don't have to live in NY to do best stuff. Anyone, anywhere can be world's best now!
