Feb 3 2013: Photograph of "midwife' seems to be caricature ! Anemia especially a fatal or even border line one is NOT at all difficult to diagnose by just inspection even to a common man ("He/she is looking so pale?") leave apart to Accredited SH Activist . If ASHA worker was available to the villagers (as evident from what 'fabricated' photograph displays) "the nurse/matron" must have (should have?) visited the pregnant woman many times before actual delivery & should have (supposed to have) given Iorn & Folic Acid tablets to the pregnant lady since the lady was registered with her IRRESPECTIVE of laboratory report of Hb . I don't think the problem lies in "quick" "affordable" &"portable" "No needles" device to diagnose anemia. As the Iron & Folic Acid tablets remained in ASHA Workers' kit only Govt. of India may purchase these devices in bulk & many people will derive Vitamin M from the "purchase" & get their purses filled! Unqualified so called "laboratory technicians" in villages would also rob poor & ignorant, illiterate villegers (or even urban) people. This device is like the device or method which detects level of Vit B 12. Rs. 800 are charged fr the test and when the test result shows that you have low levels the doctor prescribes Vitamin B 12 (or Multivitamin) tablets (hopefully not Injections - which are (actually & scientifically) indicated only in rare cases. Instead if one without getting the test done spends Rs. 800 on straight away taking Vit B 12 capsules (& pass the contents thru urine !) he may enjoy having colored urine for his life time !!!
Does any body know Indian range of Hb to label it as Anemia ? All the Normal values printed on reports by labs. are Western 'averages'.
