An idea worth spreading

Power is granted, it can be Revoked .. On a daily basis commit yourself to a random act of kindness. This doesn't need to be over-thought. Just take advantage of any random opportunity to be gentle and kind. These moments present themselves throughout our day everyday of our lives. Finally, acknowledge these acts done by or for you every day.

A comment on Talk: Robert Gordon: The death of innovation, the end of growth

Apr 25 2013: The largest portion of the "growth" Robert refers to was in the building of the infrastructure needed to support the "new technologies" largely based in the energy from fossil fuels. The next period of growth will come from building the infrastructures needed to support the new energy technologies. If you don't where the game is being played, your not going to make it to the game, and we're already at half-time. Innovation is not the same thing as invention. Dig deeper...
  • A comment on Conversation: Media ... should there be enforcable rules

Apr 19 2013: There is no fix here, we are in the unfortunate position of watching it play out. We have one of the largest and most ignorant, dispassionate and disconnected electorates in history. Our media is based on profit, emotional randomness and yellow journalism all in order to sell soap to the a drowning populace. Sound bleak? We also live in a time of extraordinary technological leaps, incredible feats of compassion amidst extreme adversity and a changing perspective in the human quotient. This world is giving way to the next, but not without a fight. So we must decide which one to stand with, this world, or the next.
  • A comment on Conversation: Media ... should there be enforcable rules

    Apr 19 2013: at one time the networks were "obligated" to air the news without commercial interference and no expectation for profit from that airtime…….I did not witness the incident you speak of however, I have no problem with the leader of our executive branch of government using any means available to incite public support for or against a ridiculously stalled governing body of the other branches of our government……we the people have had enough of this bizarre and irreverent behavior by elected officials across the entire nation perpetuated by silence from the true majority and a seemingly complete lack respect for anyone posing an alternate perspective by the current flock of boneheads in the capitol building…….it is well within the ability of Boehner and his allies to call a press conference and rebut…..stop the damned whining and do your damned job or go the hell home…..{rant end}

A reply on Conversation: Scientism and atheism are religions!

Apr 5 2013: Our quibbling aside, you and I are more closely aligned in our perspective of this world; world used in it's broader sense. I have to smile at these debates as I remember Martel's conclusion which I perceive as the best conclusion of the ongoing "science vs. religion" conversation….

    religion (riˈlijən)
    noun
the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods
    • a particular system of faith and worship: the world's great religions.
    • a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance: consumerism is the new religion.
    PHRASES
get religion informal be converted to religious belief and practices.
    DERIVATIVES
    religionless adjective
ORIGIN Middle English (originally in the sense ‘life under monastic vows’): from Old French, or from Latin religio(n-) ‘obligation, bond, reverence,’ perhaps based on Latin religare ‘to bind.’

The vast majority of people who claim to be religious, in the traditional interpretation, believe unquestioningly because they were taught to by their parents at the very earliest stages of their psychological development. Though this observation does not disprove the existence of a god, it does call into question the utter lack of critical thought on the topic of god and the dogmas associated with religious belief.
    .
Cherry picking my "observation" on religion and providing an attenuated definition of the word is at best disingenuous. In my observation I point to "more plausible possibilities" as an example where critical thinking can provide a reasonable alternative to the conundrums of religion.
    .
Atheism is an alternative to religion, not a religion.

    quale |ˈkwälē|
noun ( pl. qualia |ˈkwälēə| ) (usu. qualia )Philosophy
a quality or property as perceived or experienced by a person.
    .
ORIGIN late 17th cent.: from Latin, neuter of qualis ‘of what kind.’.
    .

I fail to see how this is not "observable" and open to "examination" ,
    .
Religion is a belief that results in the suspension of critical thinking and the denial of more plausible possibilities supported by data, the result of observation and examination.

A comment on Conversation: Scientism and atheism are religions!

Apr 3 2013: You can not expect proof that something does not exist when there is no proof it does. Furthermore I do not "push" atheism, unlike theists, but I also don't let theists get away with their nonsense…when I was a child I believed in god because I was told by the people I trusted god exists…I also believed in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, and the thing under the bed…then I grew up
