Nov 9 2012: As funny as the idea of people running around naked in Walmart is do you really think that's what kids would do if their teachers decided they shouldn't feel like mistakes? Because having a sense of dignity (and remaining fully clothed) isn't the result of shame.
Where else does shame come from if not from mistakes or any effort someone else has deemed unacceptable? It's sourced in other people's reactions to you not your conscience.
I do agree that you can use shame as a learning opportunity- to learn not to be ashamed of yourself.
Nov 9 2012: I totally agree with you. When shame is the only result to any effort no matter how humble or grand how can there be any progress? Why can't the work you create be a reward in itself instead of working for someone else's approval or to avoid feeling worthless?
Nov 9 2012: Shame has been used for generations to intimidate free thinkers (public humiliation for what the town does't approve of comes to mind).
Shame is not the normal response of a "good conscience" because shame is the result of someone else telling you how to act, not from knowing yourself what is right.
Shame isn't motivating, it's degrading.
Why would you want to improve for a teacher, a coach, or anyone else who makes you feel so bad even if shame didn't leave you feeling like you are incapable of becoming better?
Nov 9 2012: How many people honestly "sneak out with a random stranger in a shady place" to learn how to have a good sexual relationship?
Abstinence is the only certain way to prevent pregnancy since birth control or condoms don't always work. I'm not saying it's "the answer", I'm just saying it is the most dependable preventitive measure.
If the U.S. really thought it was a taboo why is it mentioned or shown in entertainment so much?
How okay parents are with what their teen's sex life varies, and there are parents out there that are fine with it, because they too realize "sex is part of being human and having a relationship".
Nov 8 2012: What kind of equality are we asking for that has a way of ensuring freedom, progress, and opportunity while rewarding hard work yet preventing corrupt money games? I would love to hear suggestions.
Nov 8 2012: Cons;
The black market will not go away for those trying to profit in on this by selling the stuff tax free and unlimited by age.
Hard drug use will not disappear.
An open mind is not dependent on drugs, and an open mind is only beneficial when it's rational, not busy having a snack attack and hallucinating.
Question;
Anyone else find it ironic that substance abuse prevention will be one of the uses for the revenue?
Nov 8 2012: While I agree that we should be honest with how we communicate to one another, especially with people who genuinely care how we answer, I don't think it will actually change our body chemistry to the extent where we will become healthy happy human beings. I know plenty of people who talk honestly all the time about how they really feel and still don't feel happy. I still think body language is only a reflection of how we feel and changing from the outside to fill a role doesn't necessarily change you. There are plenty of people who are fine on the outside but not happy internally. Just because our children anwer "I feel crummy today" instead of "fine" doesn't mean they evolve into happier people. Better posture doesn't make someone more polite. Telling someone how you feel only sometimes changes how you feel. How about instead of not only teaching our children to anwer honestly to questions about how they feel we also teach them to take responsibility for changing why they feel a certain way (I feel crummy... I'll do something about it).
