More About Me

I'm passionate about

I`m passionate about music, writing, reading, helping people with their nutritional dilemmas and basketball. There isn't really an aspect of science that doesn't interest me.

An idea worth spreading

To help raise awareness to all the terrible supplements and "natural" health products companies are trying to push, i`ve decided to start a blog where I offer nutritional advice, talk about interesting topics in nutrition, and only use reliable scientific papers. I try to do it in a humorous way (a little inappropriate at times, to be honest), but whatever helps get the message through. You can check it out here! http://matthewnelder33.wordpress.com/

Mar 9 2013: If the "big problems" you refer to are of the socioeconomic and stability variety, I feel we are unable to solve them because the people we look to, to solve them and allow others to enforce the means to solve them are politicians. The thing with politics is, simply put, there are too many politicians. I know that sounds odd, but what i`m saying is, these people are masters or rhetoric and running elaborate pep rallies. For the most part, they are not economist, scientist, or health care providers which are people who are most qualified to solve our big problems.
  • A comment on Conversation: How do we save African elephants from extinction?

Mar 3 2013: I agree that removing tusks is a good deterrent of poachers seeking to cash in on some ivory, but doing this to all elephants as well as new born elephants would prove to be a rather exhausting task. It would be favorable if, eventually, long tusked elephants were bread out of the population due to artificial selection. Eventually it would be more beneficial and safer for elephants to have little or no tusks and these are the elephants that would live on to breed. Unfortunately elephants have very long life span so seeing such a mutation or alteration take place would take a very long time. Does anybody know if the elephant genome has been sequenced yet? If we could somehow target this gene and silence it somehow we could save a lot of elephants for generations to come. Does anybody else have an idea as to whether or not this is being looked into already?

A reply on Conversation: What are the challenges that gifted and creative individuals face at present?

Feb 27 2013: Well said, I feel you there. Creative, novel thoughts or ideas are often mocked or put down. People who do this make the creative individual feel self conscious or uncomfortable with sharing, let alone acting on their ideas. It`s a shame

A comment on Conversation: What are the challenges that gifted and creative individuals face at present?

Feb 27 2013: I would say that the biggest challenges presented to gifted, intelligent individuals are less gifted, unintelligent people who possess and control a substantial amount of the cash flow on a national or even provincial/state level (whichever works for your country)
  • A comment on Conversation: Can you recall a time when you were given bad advice or unknowingly followed bad advice? What happened? How did you learn from this?

Feb 26 2013: The culture someone is raised in exerts a lot of pressure, pressure that can come from a large number of people. Good to hear you found your own path!

Feb 26 2013: Good things rarely follow "hold my beer and watch this", hilarious things nonetheless
