About Me

I'm a Master's degree student at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Doing research on snorkellers' impacts on the coral reefs at the islands off Kota Kinabalu and looking into their snorkelling patterns and movement. Bachelor's degree was in biotech, but I've jumped onto the marine ecology train now. Avid climber, photographer, diver, & (Someday) couchsurfer.

More About Me

I'm passionate about

Travelling, photography, diving, and nature conservation.

People don't know that I'm good at

Counting from 0-10 in lots of languages. Just name me any major language. Georgian? Mongolian? Hokkien? Swahili? Tamil? Welsh? Burmese? Finnish? Hawaiian? I can do it.

My TED Story

Saw my first TED video on Facebook late 2011. Someone posted a video of "Evelyn Glennie shows how to listen." It was SO amazing! Relaxing and stimulating at the same time. I totally got into TED after that. Now I check the site and TED Ed everyday for new videos.

A comment on Conversation: For non-US TEDizens: Can you tell us about your country's education system?

May 8 2013: An issue in Malaysia is the presence of vernacular schools. In Malaysia, there are private schools, national schools, religious schools, and then there're the Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools. They're a source of discontentment for the majority Malay population, who think they promote racial segregation and disunity. But the Chinese argue that the quality of education and teachers in government schools are sub-par, which I think is also somewhat true. If you probe deeper, the issue is actually intertwined with politics (The Chinese are mostly pro-Opposition now). Anyway, I'm just scratching the surface... I don't really know the details...

May 8 2013: I agree with you, the method isn't new. I myself learned some of these basic Chinese characters from a Japanese book about Kanji when I was 12 (It was a dry book; rows and rows of text). However, I have to say that ShaoLan did introduce some new stuff to the method. How is her pictorial and colourful approach, combined with stories, *not* innovative? I thought it was brilliant =)

Apr 18 2013: 1) Can deep brain stimulation do anything for comatose patients?

    2) How do you insert an electrode into the brain without causing any harmful scarring or squishing any neurons/dendrites?

    3) Is the electrode left permanently in the brains of the patients in the video?
  • A reply on Talk: Eric Dishman: Health care should be a team sport

Apr 13 2013: As a matter of fact, I do =) I registered as a donor in December 2010. It's a touching video, isn't it? To her, it's just one kidney. But to him, it's the world.

A comment on Talk: Mark Shaw: One very dry demo

    Mar 26 2013: Three questions:
    1) Could this be the new standard of "waterproofing" (At least an IP6) for the electronics industry? I can see it catching on there--though that'll largely depend on the cost--and also the SCUBA diving industry (Surely quick-dry SCUBA gears must have some appeal).
    2) How long can the repellent coating last against the elements?
    3) Can this be safely applied to the hair, so that it doesn't get sticky when you swim in the sea?
