Jun 8 2012: Although not every species is preserved in a zoo, the ones that are in zoos are generally taken very well care of. I don't think the point of a zoo is to save every single species, but to raise awareness to the general public that the animals that we find so fascinating and enjoy being around are in danger of decline due to our actions. Awareness is one of the key tactics to promoting biodiversity and species preservation. the more people that know about a particular issue, the more likely something is to be done about it.
Jun 8 2012: I agree with everything that you mentioned in your response. While there may be very many people out there who respond to the climate change and global warming by being sustainable, there are also those who need a bit more of a reason in order to change the way they live their everyday life. we are creatures of habit but we also like convenience and rewards. the the reward of doing something that may be less convenient would have to outweigh the extra effort for some people.
May 2 2012: When it comes to the consumption of organically grown produce vs. non-organically grown produce, I generally buy organic. This reason is not only due to the ecosystem services that may be provided by growing products this way, but also due to the fact that pesticides used in non-organic farming can cause certain health problems. I find that when I eat certain types of fruits, it is more common for me to experience some type of allergic reaction to non-organically grown fruits than organically grown. Wheather this is due to the types of pesticides used in the growth process is unknown to me. Organic produce is also usually grown more locally which is beneficial to our communities.
