    Apr 21 2013: What a GREAT talk. I can't even believe I haven't heard this yet.
I can relate in so many ways. I just recently left my position as a RN because they were FORCING nurses to work in an unethical manor and I couldn't bear it, refused to do it, and was penalized for being "insubordinate". It is not easy to walk out of a job when you are a single mother, believe me. But I knew the most important thing I have is my integrity and I shouldn't sacrifice that for anything.
I'll teach my child better by being an example of this rather than caving under pressure inorder to maintain a certain lifestyle. Well, I hope I'm right anyway, since I'm now unemployed.

Another note.... As an RN I have recieved numerous thank-you notes, cards, and letters from my patients and their family members over the years. I can tell you, more often than not, these letters have included NAMES and identified specific qualities and actions of the HOUSEKEEPING staff members I've worked with. It was always so impressive to me to see the impact these truly empathetic, honest, hardworking souls had on our patients and how sometimes they really assisted in their recovery! (I always made an effort to copy the letter or card and give it to the staff member(s) mentioned...to show them how important they are.)
One recent card we recieved had ONLY our housekeeper mentioned, by name, and then thanked all the CNA's and Nurses...as a group! How about that!

Loved this talk, and I'm planning on sharing it!

Nov 4 2012: "Bottom line though is this discussion should have never devolved to racial discussion or political discussion. It's an academic lecture. With a length of approximately 20 minutes, if you don't have some humor, hooks, attention grabbers, etc...you'll lose your audience. Obviously that didn't occur because 5 1/2 years later, you simpletons are still arguing over semantics of the delivery...but you have obviously watched the lecture from Start to finish...Checkmate..Leavitt.

Disclaimer: I'm Black, educated, not easily offended, and sick of the fragile minded Politically Correct world we cater to daily"

    WOW!
    How refreshing Tony!
I am thoroughly impressed by the way you put this into words.
Thank you... You are 100% correct in my book.
You should come up with an entire TED talk based on that last sentence.... Your 'Disclaimer'
    Very powerful.
  • A reply on Talk: Melinda Gates: Let's put birth control back on the agenda

May 24 2012: Have you watched Bill Gates TED talk on the energy crisis?

    http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/bill_gates.html

He discusses population control at a part of the solution to the energy crisis (because of the high levels of CO2 in our atmosphere) At one point he briefly mentions something about enhancing "reproductive health services" globally (ie: Birth control) as a method of population control. It almost seems to be a prelude to this, his Wife's TED talk. Yes, Bill and Melinda Gates foundation doesn't publicly support population control. However, It's hard not to see how this concept is a priority to them, however subtle the promotion may be.
I'm sure their foundation has done many wonderful things, and I have respect both of them. However, I disagree with the concept of providing birth control pills for women in underdeveloped areas in the name of "women's rights" and "right for responsible family planning" as Melinda discusses here. It seem's there may be another underlying motive for this initiative. But, that's only my opinion.

May 24 2012:  Very well said Lyndal.
I feel very strongly that this talk may SOUND like a good idea but Melinda has failed to acknowledge MANY of the issues that an initiative like this could possibly present.
I also see that you mentioned the risks and side effects of synthetic birth control methods which would, most likely, not be properly monitored or treated. I also have made many comments about this potential issue on this thread and my comments have been met with much criticism.
Maybe you have a better way of putting things into words where I have failed.
I think we are on the same page.
Thank you again for your insights. :-)

I take it you are being sarcastic here.
    Am I wrong?
  • A reply on Talk: Melinda Gates: Let's put birth control back on the agenda

May 22 2012: And to Alison,

I have taken a hiatus from this TED thread because I happen to be a very busy woman. However,  I appreciate your last comment. I'm glad we can respectfully agree to disagree on this matter and I too apologize if you feel that I was attempting to insult you in any way.
I never expected my comments on this talk to be met with such criticism and personal attacks. If, in defending myself, I seemed to have attacked your character in any way, I apologize because that's not what I am about.

I'm response to your last comment all I am going to say is, yes, I hear your point of view, and I think I've made mine clear as well.
But I do want to comment on your statement of my so-called "bias" on this issue.
Bias, by definition, is "an inclination to present or hold a partial perspective at the expense of possibly equally valid alternatives. Anything biased generally is one-sided, and therefore lacks a neutral point of view.
Cultural bias: interpreting and judging phenomena in terms particular to one's own culture.
Economic bias: When People/Government interpret a law/contract in their favor for economic reasons.
Cognitive bias: the human tendency to make systematic decisions in certain circumstances based on cognitive factors rather than evidence."
By this definition I would be able to conclude that YOU also have such Bias as well on the issue.
Just think, I could easily say that YOU are "bias" on the issue simply because you do NOT have the education and experience in the field that I do...that's also a form of Bias.
I'd rather not go this route.
Rather than "bias" it would be prudent of all of us to use the word "perspective" instead.
Perspective: "the state of one's ideas, the facts known to one, etc., in having a meaningful interrelationship.
The faculty of seeing all the relevant data in a meaningful relationship.
    A mental view or prospect."
We can both have different perspectives and neither one has to be bias.
    Isn't that better?

May 22 2012: Thank you for bringing this insight to light. I too am bothered by the lack of concern for the impending social implications of this "woman's rights" initiative. It's good to hear your point of view being that you have experience and connections with proximity to the area discussed.
  • A reply on Talk: Melinda Gates: Let's put birth control back on the agenda

May 22 2012: I agree with you Manuel. I don't understand why many of these people don't "get it". We cannot be ignorant to the social implications.
Also, for the record, I don't agree with "Guy Smith's" comment, but I did read that comment as sarcasm.

May 22 2012: Why does "parenting well" mean "parenting fewer children"?
Just curious how you made that conclusion.
