A comment on Conversation: Does your Perception shape your reality?
These sensory perceptions collect data.
This data is then processed in the brain in two different ways: objective, and subjective
Objective sensory information are basic facts; the who, what, when, where. It collects faces, objects, location, etc.
The Subjective sensory information is how you interpret them given your personality, past experiences, and your outlook and preconceptions.
These two sets of information work together to identify specific identities, for instance:
OBJECTIVE SENSORY INPUT:You walk to a door. You open and enter. A woman is standing behind the door. She is middle-aged with brown hair, short, and blue eyes.
SUBJECTIVE SENSORY INPUT:You walk to the front door of your house. You open and enter. Your mother is standing behind the door.
So there are two types of data collection that take place here. One simply objectively identifies the woman;the other indentifies her as your mother. The Subjective Sensory Input essentially links all of your past experiences with and past emotions towards that woman, and makes that identification much more meaningful.
The important thing to keep in mind is that perception is not usually objective. If you see an object or a person and have any kind of history with any characteristic of them, it is slightly altered from just an object or just a person. These things can be very subtle. Another example:
You see a woman walk past you on the street. She was wearing perfume and a black bag.
You notice that the perfume was the very same your ex-girlfriend used to wear. Your mother is also known to carry a black purse with her.
Instead of just objectively viewing the woman and passing on, you now associate her with two females with whom you've shared many experiences
This may happen very often throughout one's day,the extent to which we may question how much of what we see is true reality and how much of what we see is subjective.
