A comment on Talk: Rory Sutherland: Life lessons from an ad man

May 8 2012: Silly me - I find awesome radiant beauty in things other people consider ugly and dirty. The way I see it: Have no fear. Good is an active word. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And I know I'm only a stupid human so the quest to grow smarter is found down a very short road. :-)

A comment on Talk: Nancy Lublin: Texting that saves lives

May 3 2012: In this TED Talk Nancy recognizes the need to act on information she got that she didn't expect.
A close friend of mine is a fourth grade school teacher at a public school. Many times I have sat with her over dinner - just like tonight, going over the latest issue she is dealing with that is assuredly outside her "job description" in dealing with problem kids. Today she stood her ground and had the school security guard drive her, the kid (not one from her class) and his scooter home, and met the awaiting parent. She got an eye full of what was waiting for them when they arrived. It wasn't easy to digest and gave her a very different perspective seeing what the 5th grader was dealing with on a daily basis. We designed a plan for recommendation of "punishment" for the principals approval tomorrow morning, that included her spending more time regularly with the "problem child" - that had "cussed her out" and endangered himself and others today. She has seven weeks before the end of the school year to do her best work to turn this kid around. I have great faith she can. She now knows what the problems are, by the one visit to the home. Recognize the need to act on information you don't expect!

A comment on Conversation: How do we get back the neighborhood?

Apr 5 2012: Peace and Quiet. Being able to hear a pin drop outdoors in the middle of the night. Communing with the planets and stars with a sky that is unobstructed by buildings and city light. Truly seeing the Milky Way in all it's Glory for the first time, from my own back yard. Living within 2 blocks of a HUGE nature preserve. Sleeping in - in the mornings and taking naps in the afternoon. Asking to borrow a bail of hay to feed an abandoned horse. (a Real Estate crisis victim) And getting the entire communities help, support and admiration. Knowing exactly who lives where, within 500 yards of you, by name. Sitting in on Community Council meetings and having your voice listened to and more than that, having their backing when a problem arises with a public utility. (VERIZON!) These are just a few of those things - like Julie Andrews sings about: My favorite things. . . ."and then I don't feel so bad". The human condition is alive and well - and living in the far reaches, outside the cities. Very inexpensive homes in my neighborhood lately . . . .(?)

  • A comment on Conversation: How do we get back the neighborhood?

Apr 3 2012: Dear Ms. Childs,
It is a strange thing I've found. Having lived in big cities all my adult life, (NYC, LA, etc.) , it has been an eye opening experience to find the rural now area I live in to be the strongest sense of Community (Capital C) I have ever known. It has taken time, and a few crises, and talking to my neighbors and giving and getting help from them to give me the comfortable peaceful existence I think you crave. My experience tells me the answer to your question is this: Move to a rural area and start over.
    Warmest regards,
    Gerald

  • A comment on Conversation: A Corruption Observatory

Apr 2 2012: Dear Mr. Calderon,
You are on the right track. One of my favorite TED Talks is from a very brave man named Peter Eigen, a former World Bank employee.

    http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/peter_eigen_how_to_expose_the_corrupt.html

We can fund and formulate miracles to correct the worlds most desperate needs, but until we clean house of the corruption, nothing will change. Please continue the fight. I have suffered the issue of corruption for years and have tried to gently bring it into the open for discussion here:
