I was born a poor child in the South. It was a rough landing. Then it got worse.

A close friend of mine is a fourth grade school teacher at a public school. Many times I have sat with her over dinner - just like tonight, going over the latest issue she is dealing with that is assuredly outside her "job description" in dealing with problem kids. Today she stood her ground and had the school security guard drive her, the kid (not one from her class) and his scooter home, and met the awaiting parent. She got an eye full of what was waiting for them when they arrived. It wasn't easy to digest and gave her a very different perspective seeing what the 5th grader was dealing with on a daily basis. We designed a plan for recommendation of "punishment" for the principals approval tomorrow morning, that included her spending more time regularly with the "problem child" - that had "cussed her out" and endangered himself and others today. She has seven weeks before the end of the school year to do her best work to turn this kid around. I have great faith she can. She now knows what the problems are, by the one visit to the home. Recognize the need to act on information you don't expect!

A comment on Conversation: How do we get back the neighborhood?
It is a strange thing I've found. Having lived in big cities all my adult life, (NYC, LA, etc.) , it has been an eye opening experience to find the rural now area I live in to be the strongest sense of Community (Capital C) I have ever known. It has taken time, and a few crises, and talking to my neighbors and giving and getting help from them to give me the comfortable peaceful existence I think you crave. My experience tells me the answer to your question is this: Move to a rural area and start over.
Warmest regards,
Gerald

You are on the right track. One of my favorite TED Talks is from a very brave man named Peter Eigen, a former World Bank employee.

We can fund and formulate miracles to correct the worlds most desperate needs, but until we clean house of the corruption, nothing will change. Please continue the fight. I have suffered the issue of corruption for years and have tried to gently bring it into the open for discussion here:
