Jarrett J. Krosoczka: How a boy became an artist
I love this story! I had a chance to hear Jarrett speak at a children's book festival in Albany, NY. He touched on his inspiration, but not to the extent that he did during this presentation. The lessons that I draw from this talk as a teacher and a parent are that what kids need are opportunities and positive reinforcement. Their enthusiasm and talent will then take them where their interests lie. I see too much structure being placed on kids today and although it gets them involved, they are never truly allowed to explore and follow their own inner voice. Jarrett shows that although he didn't have very much growing up, the adults in his life gave him the tools to do what he loves to do. There are many people in the world who have started out with much more, but aren't encouraged to find their own way. Very inspirational to say the least!

Should TED drop the price of attending their events?
Thanks for the info. I just looked and saw some events in NY. How are these events affiliated with TED.? Is TED a brand name? Can anyone start an event under the name of TED? I'm kind of new to this so I would like to know what to expect. have you been to any local TEDx events?

I have no idea what the structure of the whole TED entity is. I just know that $7,500 to attend any conference is a lot of money and $2,500 to go and watch it via large screen seems like even more money. When you add in travel costs, it could be too much for a lot of people.

My hope would be a format that would not separate us based on how much we can afford to spend. You can only be active on a limited basis if you can't afford to go. You make a good point Mike! Thanks for your comment and adding to the conversation!

Thanks Xavier! For me, it's a matter of principle as well. It's hard to rationalize spending that much money to attend seminars in person. I think we're all looking to be more involved but I feel like there is a ceiling for many of us because of cost.
