12/08-current Substitute Teacher, Missoula County Public Schools
Supervisor: Anita Thomas, Sub Dispatcher/Clerk, 728-2400, Ext. 1020

Substitute Teacher, Stevensville Public Schools
Supervisor: Jim Notaro, Principal, 406-777-5481
As a substitute, it is my duty to fill in for the teacher who is absent. This means following lesson plans, improvising if there are no lesson plans, and helping students with academic and social issues. Substitute teaching changes from day to day, and as a result, I must adapt to the school district, school, grade level, subject, teaching style, and students I work with each day. I use classroom management, organization, improvisation, and quick thinking skills everyday. Also, it is necessary that I be personable, kind, fair, fun, and reasonable.

Fall 2007 Student Teaching, Stevensville High School, Stevensville, MT.
Cooperating Teacher: Connor Warner, 406-777-5481 x112
My student teaching position at Stevensville High School was under the direction of Conner Warner, Stevensville High’s English Department Chair. I taught a range of ages and ability levels including English 12, Legends and Images (an English Elective course), AP Literature, AP American Studies, and I also helped teach reading workshop IV (a program for students whose reading skills need improvement) using the SRA reading program. During this experience, I was also involved in MBI (Montana Behavioral Institute) training, I attended English Department meetings, reading workshop meetings, and IEP/Special Education collaboration meetings.

Spring 2007 Intermediate Field Experience, Hellgate High School, Missoula, MT Cooperating Teacher: Shaun Gant, 406-728-2400 x6080
During this experience, I observed Shaun’s teaching methods and classroom management techniques while participating in class discussion and aiding Shaun with instruction. I created and implemented several effective and adaptable lessons plans, developed differentiated instruction strategies to ensure inclusion of students of all levels of achievement, and I communicated effectively with students.

March 2007 MT Writing Proficiency Assessment Training & Scoring Workshop
This 2-day professional development workshop trained pre-service and professional teachers in scoring student essays according to the Montana State Holistic Rubric. Through this experience, I improved my efficiency and accuracy grading student essays using a rubric. It was also an opportunity to network with teachers from across the state and learn the standards to which our students’ writing is held.

2005- 2006 Knitting Instructor, Michaels Arts & Crafts, Missoula, MT
In this position, I developed and lead knitting lessons while demonstrating proper methods and techniques. During each class, I checked students’ work, assigned homework, and encouraged independent practice.

I spend time with our elderly residents as often as possible to ensure our standards of accommodation are met. I am also responsible for fostering a warm, friendly, atmosphere. This job requires people skills, time management, and problem solving abilities. In addition, I answer a multi-lined telephone, write letters, send out correspondence and photocopy important documents.

8/03-9/05 Admin. Assistant, Raymond James Financial Srvcs. Inc.- Missoula, MT
In this position, I was in charge of all compliance suitability. Many aspects of this position required that I comply with state and federal regulations. Greeting clients, answering a multi-line telephone, and taking detailed messages were also a significant portion of this job. This position required attention to detail, organization skills, technical abilities, self-motivation, and a positive friendly attitude.

  • A comment on Talk: Sugata Mitra shows how kids teach themselves

Aug 31 2008: I am teaching a creative technology course in which students can determine how they want to create with technology. I love this talk because I've seen similar results in my rural classroom. When presented with a free choice of what to do with technology students flourish! Currently my students are creating a website for their high school's sports teams. They came up the idea, the design, and the elements. My role is advocate, coach, and mentor. The students set goals and determine how best I can evaluate and assess their work (grading is based on acheivement, effort, creativity, participation, and completion of goals!). My students have set high standards for themselves which I feel will drive them to success.

Jul 4 2008: As I teacher I felt Sir Ken Robinson's talk hit the mark. It was funny and inspiring..I hope there are more talks of this nature.
  • A comment on Talk: Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity

Jul 4 2008: As an educator I applaud Sir Robinson for his insightful remarks. I am happy to report that teacher education is headed in the direction of fostering student creativity and decompartmentalizing knowledge (at least here at the University of Montana it is). Pedagogy is becoming less and less about rote memorization and rehearsal of facts and more about each individual student.

Although teacher education is heading in the right direction it is time the members of TED begin focusing on what we should do about the No Child Left Behind Act which stifles creativity and authentic assessment. It is very important we ensure an equal opportunity for all, but how can we do that without equally squandering our students abilties and critical thinking skills?
