Jan 29 2012: "you can have what you want now" culture is part of the last 15 years. People had got used to getting what they want (not what they need) in an instant due :
Fast loans (we now see the financial crisis an down turn...)
Microwave lifestyle of save time, heat& gratify in 30secs (eat cheap repeatable /chemical loaded junk),
Parents working long hours, and kids being brought up in a culture of have it now (food, gadgets, clothes, anything)
Tv shows, marketing it all had this influence...
Th current generation (teenager/ young adults) will find it very challenging in the new economic downturn...
There is no right or wrong answer to any of this, a hundred years back London/England was known for gin drinkers even babies... People were hooked, times changed, people changed...
We can not hide from the rate at which technology is changing and affecting our lives and thinking..
Anyone blocking out this change and not going through the learning/ adapting process will be at disadvantage.
We just need to ride through this current fad and see what the new economy and what the current generation brings forth in next 10 years..
Evolution, survival of the smartest and fittest , is for those who maintain their sanity and hope through all the evolving changes..
Jan 25 2012: As in the George Orwell book "Animal Farm", the concept of "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others" will always prevail in the evolution of mankind (cultures, societies etc). certain people will always rise to the top of the food chain (programming through their upbringing and values). Such people will enjoy their power position, and will get into conflict when interacting with other people in similar powerful positions. When such powerful people collide, and get into conflict over matters (energy, food, water resources etc); then each person will hold their ground whether right or wrong to get what they need in order to maintain their own position of superiority, credibility, and integrity within their own organisational hierarchy.
Highly powerful people are usually running high on tostesterone, and truly believe in their own ideals. If such people are apposed in their mission, such people can easily resort to violence to realise their goals. You see lighter/ smaller scale examples of this sort of behaviour amongst highly driven/ tostesterone fuelled sportsmen resorting to blows over a football game.
When the stake are bigger/ gains higher and teams bigger; this is when armies or gangs rise up to delivering the leaders demands...
Even through evolution and becoming civilised, the easy option for most people in powerful positions to get what they want is to resort to violence squash any opposition and take what they need.
Jan 24 2012: I am not a scientist, but here is my thinking on this question:
Neural activity is like microchip/ CPU, the human brain wiring& chemicals for processing information (learning, analysing, imagining, perceiving etc)
From when you are born, you learn from your surroundings/ circumstances (parents, siblings, friends, school, books, tv, surroundings etc). Based on what the norm is in your upbringing (thieving, working hard, life of luxury, religion , culture etc) your sense of self is formed . Your brains wiring starts to become "hard wired" biased towards curtain deep/ inert feelings, which become your personal filters. These filters will influence your thoughts and perceptions towards others.
If your are born from a hard working, honest family, with a happy (& tough times) up bringing then you are likely to see the world in a balanced way. If your upbringing was biased towards hardship or extreme luxury, then your feelings/ thoughts and perceptions will be filtered and biased in an imbalanced view point...
In summary in my laymans / non scientific opinion, neural activity is brains capability to process information/ learn and evolve. It is your learnings from your surroundings that form your inner thoughts, feelings and perceptions.
