3 hours ago: I'm no expert on any of this, but I'm pretty sure there are a lot of kids who live in situations where one-on-one education with a parent/guardian is not feasible or not advisable. These are also probably the kids that might benefit the most from early childhood programs.
Feb 28 2013: I am very fortunate to be a 21-year-old Computer Engineering and Mathematics Major at Miami University in Ohio, United States.
Three months ago I started taking courses on Udacity. So far I have completed three of them.
I have to say, as someone who has taken MOOC courses in tandem with live college courses, it's getting really difficult for me to justify the $15,000-a-year my family and I are spending to put me through school--at least from the acquiring skills aspect of it (from an economist's perspective, the expensive piece of paper they give you at the end is worth every penny).
Especially for a lot of STEM fields, I think post-secondary education is unnecessary. From my experience, sites like Udacity and Coursera do a really good job of facilitating that type of learning.
So, my strategy for the rest of college is to try to take courses in fields I would never get myself to study on my own...
Now if I could just get my parents to take some courses on Udacity, we could finally have some interesting Skype conversations... :) jk
Feb 15 2013: I too was super impressed by the clarity of ideas in this talk! Fantastic!
The quote "Mystery is not about traveling to new places but about looking with new eyes." got me thinking about how much life and love is like a creative process. It is like how, when I am challenged to write new lyrics or compose new melodies, against what seems like countless odds of being cliche of outdated, I am still eventually able to come up with something novel and interesting. I think the same perspective applies to how we view our romantic partners.
Nov 19 2012: Yes! I agree; in fact, I would go as far as to say that the video game (as an art and technology) is the modern Renaissance of human achievement. It combines visual art, narrative and storytelling, voice acting, puzzle/game mechanics and design, sound design, amazing musical scores, rigorous technology behind efficient use of computing resources, the maximum usage of the GPU (which it majorly motivated), the design of elegant simulation software and game engines--it encapsulates so much of what the human race has accomplished culturally and technologically.
