  • A comment on Conversation: Why is the idea of education so strongly tied to a structured and systematic way of learning? Do other teaching styles have equal value?

Dec 18 2011: We can only manage what we can measure. Large scale educational system as to be managed. Unfortunatly, most other form of learning are dependant to the motivation of teachers in school. Fortunatly, we learn in every moment we live.
  • A reply on Conversation: Should economics be a mandatory class since elementary school?

    Dec 18 2011: Hello Gordon,

Thank you for your comment. Having a different opinion is always leading to more thinking :)

I would like to start by ask you precision about your comments.
When you talk about the current shape of economy, do you mean North America, Western countries or worldwide?

If you are talking at a global scales living standard are constantly and globally increasing. Children can learn it with tools such as DHI from the United Nations Development Program. I do not see why teaching it may be problematic.

Even if you are talking only about a specific part of the world that is in crisis, it is worse studying. In economics, crises are view as part of a normal long term cycle. If crisis are apprehend properly they should lead to change in the fundamental structures in the local economy towards activity where one can be competitive. Protectionism creates a temporary illusion that leads to a greater disaster when the barrier is failing. Reactivity can be therefore taught to children in order to give them the state of mind to adapt to any future situation they might encounter.
I would love to have your feedback.

    Dec 18 2011: Hi Kristian,

I would like to start by congratulation on your work, creating games instead of formal classes is a lot more work but leads to amazing results from what I have seen when I was a student (in additional to formal class not instead :) )

Regarding the content, is it possible that you teach first simple observation of the reality (existence of different type of markets for example is hardly contestable) than introduce prudently models. Spending time on explaining what a model is essential anyway for the understanding of a lot of social sciences.

As a someone who is not a teacher I am glad to have your feedback and it is great to hear about this type of initiative 

Dec 17 2011: Hi Dan, Hi contributors,
It’s almost impossible to disagree with you on the tools but one of the objectives is more questionable: making employable citizens.
It’s true that most kids will become employees but it should be presented to children as only one of the options. We should value entrepreneurships as much, I believe. Risk taking; dream pursuit should be encourage in a rational way.
Some kids may be creating thousands of jobs and improving living conditions if we let them envisage themselves as entrepreneurs. What do you think?

A comment on Conversation: Africa does not need any more aid to develop, it needs moral support and guidance to harness her resources to develop

Dec 16 2011: One of the key problems of Africa is…democracy. Right?

The social structures of most communities in this continent were much smaller than the one in Western Countries. Or at least the basic social structures were. Therefore, changing from those structures to democracy at a country level in only few dozen of years leads to major issues.

In a system were the head was responsible for the distribution of responsibility, task, resources and the peace-maker, new head of government do so. Even when they know, in theory, that they are supposed to manage only the executive, it is culturally impossible for them to limit themselves to this. They want to keep the system continuity which is view as the bases of the peace!

The head start to share resources (money, business opportunities, and government positions) among community leaders according to their influence. Those leaders repeat the process in their own community. The problem (further the legal one) is that when you are not in a community you are excluded from the all process.
In my opinion surprisingly the best transition to efficient democratic and economic transition were made in constitutional monarchy or country where someone has been leading for decades. Unfair but more efficient!

So if we want to help countries to develop we should focus on creating the enHow can we change that? With foreign aid?
  • A comment on Conversation: Si nous savons que l'argent n'est pas la bonne motivation, alors est-elle le but premier du travail ?

Dec 16 2011: Bonjour Serge, Hi Everybody,

Market Economy might not be perfect but it is by far the best system we have so far.

Money is one of the fundamental tools of markets. The only problem is the lack of education of most people in economics. And according to offer/ demand law: yes, money is one way to measure value of things. One way!
Ceteris paribus sic stantibus, a work that pays more as a greater economical value. It seems clear and logical to me.
  • A reply on Conversation: If/when same-sex marriage is legalised, should ALL religious bodies be required by law to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies?

    Dec 16 2011: Stuart,

I am not answering to the main topic here but to your 3rd point.

Regarding terror acts or any type of actions that the actors do in the name of a doctrine, religious or belief: you cannot assume that is a will of religions!
As a democrat, you should be aware that they are not entitled to speak in the name of any communities. It is not because they say and believe so that they are!
I have been living in a Muslim country for two years and never heard of anyone agreeing on any terror acts. Terrorist are not elected or representative of any religious community. Come on, 911 as nothing to do with a religious act!

    Come on Stuart!

In the same logic using word such as “War against Terror” leads to the same false idea? It is not an army or any organization representing a community. It is just a small group of extremist that are criminals. Nothing more!
  • A comment on Conversation: How much emphasize should school put on developing soft skills âpeople skills- rather than intelligence?

    Dec 16 2011: Hey Steve,

A: as you say it's value that we teach along the way in family, sport, school all social moments. In my opinion, it cannot be a focus by itself.
    B: Completely agree.

But then you need C: help children what they should or could learn and why it is important to learn. In other words: self motivation and willingness to learn. That's where they get the "hard" skills.
    With me on that point?
