But solving real problems through innovation or entrepreneurship by an arts or science tehcnology development protocol typically can use the success model of a music band. That's typically 5 people of various instrument players and a singer.
In doing a SBIR Proposal (a popular government funding for small business research), you need typically about 5 people also.
2 of them are part timers, or consultants. One project leader, one admin, and one market research plus coordinator.
So 5 people seems to be a "good fit" doing something new in music or technology development rather than 12 in the context of small groups such as a music band or a technology development small tech biz team.
A comment on Conversation: What can we do to change education?
For example, education must be a cultural process with stronger paricipation of families and kids working together in ways that help kids to learn by doing projects that they choose and help them create motivation for knowledge eocnomy of the future and identify and use natural skills and talents.
Education cannot be separate from culture and community building. But now in America, these are separate topics in most communities. Leadership in education can be broadened considerably with industry and foundation participation on a community level rather than on a mass level as done mostly now.
A comment on Conversation: Can we ever design an experiment which can determine whether God exists?
On balance both are used for good and not evil by all the great religious traditions existing today.
There are two things that are new in the history of mankind. First is the idea of "religious freedom" that came at birth of America in 1776, a revolutionary idea introduced here by philosophy of amazing founding father.
Second is our recent understanding of who we are based on the recent understanding of the mechanism of inheritance for almost all life forms on earth.
It's startling understanding that takes us one more step to understand how precious life is and even more how very precious intelligent intelligent life form, humans, onely one specie is among all those life forms that exist on earth.
What is incredible however that same "preciousness" of intelligent life form on earth, humans come from a different field of study, ie, astrophysics.
Among billions and billions of stars out in our own galaxie, the milky way, there is no known other intelligent life form despite the decades of the SETI program searching for such life forms. Carl Sagan's movie produced in the Mid-90s "Contact" is still in the relm of science fiction.
But with an important message as to where to look for "God", both out there in the vastness of the universe and in the hearts and minds of every single living human being.
For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.

A comment on Conversation: How important is the economy?
What sparked my interest in this topic is a rather homespun prophecy I saw recently on a rather popular Utube presentation by "Patriotic Nurse" who is located I undersrtand at Appalachia. Her prophecy is that United States is due for a second Civil War, perhaps in a decade to two decades, ie, inevitable in fact.
Ok so, it's easy to dismiss Patriotic Nurse as frivolous. But I didn't. I can clearly see her prophecy is not way out of line if another "Wall Street Meltdown" came, when the hands of the government to take action as was done recently was tied due to inablity to borrow money, even less abel now than in the depresssion years when America had relatively far less debt.
But I disagree with Patriotic Nurse on one key point. I think the "inevitablity" of her prophey can be substantially reduced as the severety of the first American Civil War (1861-1865) could have been reduced substantially if not completely.
I am glad to see that my counter-points to Patriotic Nures is doing well in in the Squidoo.com internet platform where I just published my counter-points .
The title of my Squidoo lense is as follows:
"Dance For America Now At Hometown USA__Avoid Civil War Come Again 3rd Decade 21st Century".
But I do respect Patriotic Nurse's homespun wisdom and considerable thoughtful presentation. Point _ Counter Point. I hope there will be thoughtfl consideration to both viewpoints for deeper wisdom and to avoid the scenerio that you have described which is very much what Patriotic Nurse has used as the main planck of her prophecy for another disastrous Civil War in America.
A comment on Conversation: Our TEDxKhartoum 2013 theme is ""Knowledge Into Action". We are asking how can we put together some scenes or images to visualize our theme?
I am a story teller using music and visuals. So I always adminre and appreciate the TED speakers who are masters of verbal communications.
I just did a Google search on the following topic that is an important philosophic theme for my "community vitality boosters" focused work. This internet search topic is this " A Philosophy of American Heritage Humanity, Prosperity, Freedom and Justice". Wow ! several photos and short Public Service Announcments (PSA) came up that I have published from time to time recently. There are photos associated with this philosophy. If you find any photos that looks intersting for you, be glad to share them with you or help you adopt them for your theme wihch of course likley has differnet philosophy than the one I am using. But I would hope there are synergy and value added elements to your TED philosophy and mine that can be illustrated by photo as well as short PSA such as I am using typicallly 5 to 8 minutes long on the UTube Unlisted Channel.

Yes, I have made mistakes in life, some has brought me pain and suffering . But wisdom and knowledge has also come with age, experience and learning.
It's been exhiliarting to climb on the shoulders of great minds, both philosophy and arts, and also in science.
But dominating element of this life journey has been my inheritance in spirituality coming from my family roots linked to ancient Hindu cultural heritage of India.
So, where do I stnad now __In my day to day life pursuits ?

Pursuit and demonstrate by example :
Humanity, Peace, Justice and Dignity for all on a commuity, nation and as "Friends of Earth" .

A comment on Conversation: Challenge the technology
Yet, to have a hugh gap between poor and rich as to where they live (ie poor live in the "dark" part and the middle class live in the "light" part is not compatible with philosophy of America. "Muli-Income" community challnage America have been working on but takes time and resources to implement.
So, my top item in the list is "Community type housing" (called Modular Housing") , inexpensive but attractive apartement type housing that is suitable for poor, elderly and college students is a key focus.
I just searched on Google "Innovative Modular Housing Construction For Urban Poor In Mixed Income Neighbhorhoods__My Favorites" that I published few weeks ago at Squidoo.com to help bring attention to this philosophy and opportunity issue for Hometown USA community boosters.

Why ?
Well one reason is that Fairfax County Supervisors (our elected local government) have published for all to see the 7 priority goals where county resources in order of priorty are being made . This list I found at the Fairfax County Government website about a year or so ago and have been following up on the 3 top goals listed , currently as follows:
(01) Education (Preps for Knowledge Economy Future)
(02) Community Safety (includes safety in schools and community facilities)
(03) Healthier community.

But there is always short term and long term.
(01) on Short Run, strengthen and reform the financial system to avoid a disaster of a Wall Street meltdown that also effects many other nations. Natural disasters as well as man made disasters are at issue.
(02) Strengthen education such as that kids are motivated to invest in themselves for careers of the future. Non-Cognitive skills such as creativity and artistic elements such as drama are just as vital as cognitive skills such as measured by SAT test that all high school students know.
(03. Pruse the 4 Pillars of Philosophy at community level at Hometown USA__Humanity, Peace, Justice and Dignity via arts and science bridge. There are tools and skills that are available now , for example this social network, TED and there are others. But wisdom and humility are required and not political rhetorics.

Also, public education in America is a responsbility of local government suppored by local taxies. Thus any protype "demo projects' must be successfully demonstrated at a community level such as a small group of us are working to do here at Fairfax VA__Hometown USA.
Finally, it's pretty clear from education research of last decade or so that "non-cognitive" skills are critical to develop as much as "cognitive skills". Kids who play a music instrucment for example that requires "non-cognitive" creative skills, inevitably do better in cognivtive skills preps as measured by SAT. This new understanding is a key element of education demo projects on a community level.
