Mar 2 2012: I've read both Allan's books and have known of his insight into ecology and agriculture since 1990. I put in a request over a year ago on TED for Allan Savory. I think his voice is absolutely essential in these times when sustainability in agriculture and our civilization is a primary imperative for survival.
Nov 6 2011: I guess I've always thought intelligent beings have the capacity to be bored. If we are not challenged in life or don't find meaning and fulfillment in what we do, we can get bored and frustrated and even demoralised.
I think boredom is a reality of our species...
Nov 3 2011: More complex organisms have more complex bodies and more complex movements to navigate and survive therefore they need a centralized command center (i.e. brain) over a simple neural network to anticipate, predict and plan future movement (action). I think that is the principle here. Yes Life is Motion, and everything is moving in some way and in some sense and there are many systems for movement in the living world.
Oct 31 2011: Anthony, The world is changing. And the new paradigm is Holism or Systems Thinking. We are moving away from a Reductionist world view into a more Holistic world view. The past several hundred years of Western civilization has been a Reductionist/Rational centered construct. Sexism has little to do with this being the case as civilization before that time was more balanced in it's world view, although perhaps not holistic, and still it was a male dominant society as many societies have been throughout history.I believe it is more noble to champion a cause that brings the world together with all of our different gifts rather than shouting or cheering for one group at the expense of the others.
Our country was founded on Levelism or perhaps you would call it Equalism today as now we believe all "persons are created equal." No one is superior to the other, but each can offer a unique perspective.
Oct 30 2011: Maybe this better demonstrates that the Intuitive and Rational mind really have nothing to do with one gender or the other. Using one gender throughout would remove confusion and cultural biases about men's minds versus women's minds. Although maybe it would have been preferable to use all female characters as not to hurt anybody's feelings.
Just playing devil's advocate here...
Oct 27 2011: Very good points you make here. And I think we can cultivate both sides reason and/or intuition. Some individuals are better at one or the other and yet I still think we can work with each other as well as improve ourselves.
Oct 27 2011: It is my understanding that "Emotion" is a primitive brain function controlled primarily by the Amygdala. I believe there is a real difference between "Intuitive" and "Emotional".
The talk seems to be focusing on the two sides of the Cortex where the Rational mind and the Intuitive mind exist together. Emotion is something different I think here.
Oct 26 2011: Actually I would say Ian is proposing the two hemispheres were evolved together to work together in a very"holistic" way and the intuitive side has lost it's voice in modern times and proposes we return to a balance of the two hemispheres. It seems to me gender has little to do with a Holistic world view versus a Reductionist world view. Holism tries to bring the two together (intuitive and rational) in a constructive and meaningful way.
Bringing up gender is divisive, it simply just does not apply to the speaker's conclusion.
At least the message I'm getting here...
