Roger Stein: A bold new way to fund drug research
==== Further look up http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancerbasics/lifetime-probability-of-developing-or-dying-from-cancer The numbers in the talk your probability of getting cancer... 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women don't match whats on Cancer.org site why? Did Cancer.org get it wrong? So where exactly did those numbers in the talk come from? Why was there no source? ==== I've checked that website and the figures given in the talk actually match those in the website (1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women). Regarding transparency, something that might possibly work is having all accounting, including salaries, public and (borrowing this idea from charity: water) getting all places where the research/clinical_trials take place online (with both addresses and GPS coordinates).

Roger Stein: A bold new way to fund drug research
I agree that there is some more or less large uncertainty to this new kind of funds. Ultimately we could have very few new drugs discovered and/or a great leverage could make the funds' managers try to cheat someway. But I think that if these new funds are implemented with transparency they could do greater good than harm. As always, you shouldn't put all your eggs in the same basket, though; so, I would NOT advise you to put all your savings in these new funds.
