Oct 18 2011: I believe that both are equal in term of importance. We should always look ahead and try to resolve the issues today to improve the world we live in and ensure that we pass on to the next generation a planet that they can use and that is not on the verge of physical, or moral, destruction.
At the same time, I believe that history repeats itself, and that by studying the past, we can decipher the present and better plan for the future. Technologies and political lines change. The human has not changed much and the basic human nature has not evolved much in the last millennium.
Oct 18 2011: I agree that smoking is not dealt with seriously enough in all countries of the world. We should educate the young on the dangers of smoking and should encourage a smoking free culture. Smoking should not be glorified by the media, and cigarette sale should be controlled so that only above 21 year olds can get smoke from shops.
One thing that you should note is the strong addiction of smoking. I am an ex-smoker. I gave up smoking around 10 years ago, dead turkey, and never regretted it for a minute. My life style improved, health improved, my family are happier, ..etc. However, every now and then, a couple times a year, I get the urge to light up a ciggarette. I do not give in, but it is a strong addiction.
May be some research should be dedicated on the addiction centers responsible for the tobacco addiction.

A comment on Conversation: Why are we trying to find a new antidote for tobacco related cancers when we can eradicate the poison!
