  • A reply on Talk: Jim Toomey: Learning from Sherman the shark

Mar 20 2012: When surfing, you are entering their territory, their home. You do it on your own risk and must be aware of the danger. And if a shark appears and tries to bite you? Well, bad luck, but you knew what you were getting into. It´s the same thing as going on a walking safari in Africa and be surprised by the presence of lions. Surfing is your hobby and if you don´t feel safe, don´t do it. But if you love the ocean, you should totally support shark conservation.

A comment on Talk: Simon Berrow: How do you save a shark you know nothing about?

Mar 17 2012: Great talk, Simon! And it has been viewed 160 900 times already, great job on raising the awareness about this fascinating creature!

I wish there was a way to avoid the by-catch. With such a low population, every life is precious.

Best of luck in your future work!

A reply on Talk: Simon Berrow: How do you save a shark you know nothing about?

Mar 17 2012: Please, listen to the talk carefully before you post a comment like this.

Simon said: "They are thought to be able to filter a cubic kilometer of water every hour."

    What does it tell you?
    1) It´s not an exact and scientifically confirmed figure and he knows that.
    2) "To filter" doesn´t mean "to swallow". In layman's term - the water goes in through its huge mouth and leaves through its gills. The shark only swallows the plankton, not the water!

A comment on Conversation: Is being gay a choice, or genetic make up?

Nov 7 2011: Let´s imagine a world where being gay is a choice:

Everybody is attracted to both sexes equally. When the time of choosing a life partner comes, they choose the member of opposite sex. Maybe few artists in open-minded countries decide to go gay, but that´s it. Everybody can clearly see the advantages of being straight. And nobody would choose homosexuality in countries where they could be seriously penalized for that.

Seriously, I don´t understand why there even is a conversation like this on TED...
  • A reply on Conversation: The US constitution 13 amendment bans the condition of slavery. PETA is suing Sea World for enslaving Orcas. Do animals have rights in USA?

Nov 2 2011: I haven´t heard about this pet shop ban in San Francisco - is it already in force? How is it working so far? I would love to hear more about that. I don´t usually agree with PETA but I totally agree that pet shops are something we can live without. If you want a pet, go to the shelter, as simple as that.

On the other hand, PETA is making me furious almost every time I hear their new ideas and suggestions. I actually believe that they are one of the main reasons, why people like me gets little undertanding from the public. "I am a vegetarian and I believe in animal rights." Try to say this in a local pub. You´re gonna be laughed at. Because they only know all the PETA´s ridiculous campaigns.
I am not trying to convert my meat-eating friens into vegetarians. When they ask me about my vegetarianism, I explain my reasons. If they are interested about animal rights, I´ll tell them about organic meat, free range chickens and eggs, sustainable fishing, send them some links, for example the TED talk "Graham Hill: Why I'm a weekday vegetarian". And then it is up to them.
I am a vegetarian and I believe in animal rights. I support many organizations which are trying to save animals - whether it is a local shelter or organization saving endangered species in the wild.
And you know what? PETA hates me, because I am not vegan...
  • A comment on Conversation: If you have discovered something you are passionate about, how did you discover that thing?

Nov 2 2011: I remember reading an article about a little survey in Britain, where animal lovers and wildlife enthusiasts were asked, what influenced them.; how did they discover this passion. Most of them answered that it was mainly Sir David Attenborough and his books and documentaries. And I am no exception.
  • A comment on Talk: Joshua Klein: The intelligence of crows

Oct 25 2011: This talk is amazing. The adaptability and intelligence of these birds is incredible! We really should appreciate them more..
