About Me

Principal of my own firm. Taken the 'road less traveled' following college and continue to explore new horizons where they appear. First generation child born & raised in the midwest USA with all the attendant values & outlook that implies. Forever curious intellectually, unopposed to risk, hard work. Athletic & inclined to physical exertion. Inspired by good design, clever ideas, music, art, horses & the song of crickets. Fond of communicating with people, observing places, events & politics. Find humor & intellect sexy, self-absorption horrid. Adore my family, cherish my friends. Heros: My father who fought in Burma in WWll, my mother who raised three teachers & one rebel, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Churchill.

My TED Story

From the ages of 3 -12 my childhood held magic. Our mother chased us out of the house 'to play'. We adventured all over the neighborhood, walked or biked everywhere, played street games until well past dark. 14 houses with 56 kids, it was a political romp. We learned to nurture, fight and work out our grievances. Exploring the tiny world at our feet, the river running past, the trees over our heads gave us imaginations that soared with the wind, slept with soft rains, cleansed our lungs & invigorated our minds with sunshine and cold winters. TV was new and adult themes were boring. Painting or drawing, reading, dancing, music, making up stories and acting them out occupied our time. Assisting with household chores was expected and varying levels of responsibility was earned. School was exciting, serious, important. Liberated we were off to our adventures again. Wonder & freedom to explore, gifts of childhood that last a lifetime.

  • A reply on Conversation: What is the source for the force of gravity?

Apr 3 2012: Ahh, thank you, way out of practice. Now about the Black Hole, is it caused by a super dense object traveling at a speed that allowed it to rip through the space 'mattress', pulling everything behind it?
  • A comment on Conversation: What is the source for the force of gravity?

Mar 26 2012: Suppose the Earth did not turn, as the center is essentially 'still', there is no energy applied foward or back [acceleration/zero velocity], so Gravity is essentially the effect of opposing forces. The question may be re-phrased: How does centrifugal force affect objects at the outer edge of the radius as opposed to the inner core? Or: Does gravity have a source? Or: Is gravity the result of opposing forces?
Newton created mathematical equations for these questions, have they been disproved? ARGH< another question.......
  • A comment on Talk: Peter Saul: Let’s talk about dying

Mar 26 2012: Kudos for your bravery. Practical points to consider, for one's peace and for those they care about or care for them. Culturally speaking, dignity has been removed from death [in many present day countries] in our search for everlasting youth. It is time to change the paradigm to one of responsible choice.
  • A comment on Conversation: How can TED help networking between young, up and coming scientists, and experts in the field?

Oct 22 2011: This idea has merit and deserves more exploration.
A social platform that is open to participants that register for access to post their interests, ideas and answers to questions that provide direction on science discovery is a great idea.
Wikipedia already has extensive information available & TED provides a platform of discovery. Granted the process of research is time consuming, however the questions that happen in that process are where the science is applied. Private R&D is specific to the area of application. Real discovery happens often 'on the road' to solving a problem. Shortcuts are created through collaborations and the people involved with the focus interest.Knowledge is power and experience ( of a researcher) allows a scientist to distill that knowledge into a question that can be applied to a problem. No shortcuts there.
