A comment on Conversation: If you could do a TED talk, what would you talk about?

Sep 29 2011: I would present a proposal for a radical redesign of financial and securities markets' regulation. I've been a compliance officer and attorney working in the investment industry for the better part of two decades, and I believe in a vision of a strong, transparent, logical regulatory system that protects all participants. We have a long way to go, but I am not without hope.
  • A comment on Conversation: A constitutional amendment relating to politics and politicians in Congress

Sep 26 2011: Regarding No. 2, since 1982 members of Congress have been participating in the Social Security program like the rest of us. Not sure requiring all their retirement funds be moved to SS makes sense given that SS is a very different program from a DB or DC plan.

The bigger target we need to focus our collective attention upon, in my humble view, is the overall system itself and not so much members of Congress themselves, though of course they are a major component and need to be subject to as much transparency and accountability as any aspect of the system.

By "overall system" I mean the election cycle and the de facto requirement for endless fundraising, with particular emphasis on corporate and organizational money that is largely unregulated and unrestricted. Until we clean that up, minor details like Congressional health benefits are akin to rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

A comment on Conversation: When was your 'Eureka' moment?

Sep 23 2011: First time I gazed deeply into my son's eyes when he was about 13 hours old. His eyes locked onto mine and we stared directly into each other's eyes for what might have been a few seconds or several minutes, I honestly have no idea. All I know is that everything else around me melted away and I was completely absorbed by what was behind those eyes. It was then I saw it for the first time: The Infinite. The endless timeless Everything/Nothing that my finite mind cannot fully understand yet can, in rare beautiful moments like the one I'm describing, be glimpsed and experienced. I had never felt so equally alive and non-existent (not in a scary nihilistic way, just a non-physical way).

A reply on Conversation: You wake up today and you have reached the life of your dreams. What is it like ??

Sep 23 2011: How very kind of you, Colleen, thank you! Your comment inspired this thought: "You know what? Colleen's right, I am living the life of my dreams already...my challenge is I am not always aware that I am!"

You've helped me more than you know.

A comment on Conversation: You wake up today and you have reached the life of your dreams. What is it like ??

Sep 23 2011: In the life of my dreams, I wake up fully present and remain fully present in all that I do. I focus my attention and energy upon the people I love most -- my wife and two children -- and I enjoy each day as a blank canvas waiting to be painted, and not painted entirely by me but rather trhough me and the world around me.

In the life of my dreams I balance time spent with family, time spent with community, and time spent alone.

In the life of my dreams I exercise daily, eat healthy foods (many grown at home) and inspire my family and others to join me on that path.

In the life of my dreams I ensure that I create something new every day, even if it's as brief as a one-line entry or small doodle in my journal. I include "intake" (e.g., reading, watching a TED video, attending a class or lecture, etc.) as well as "output" (writing, drawing, building, etc.).

In the life of my dreams I contribute something positive to the world outside me, participating as either a business leader, teacher, volunteer, student, writer, speaker, or some combination of those aspects of my passions.

In the life of my dreams I've achieved financial independence to the point at which I can take care of my family, including extended family, and can invest and participate in ventures in which I believe have the potential to make a positive difference in people's lives.

In the life of my dreams everyone I love knows darn well that they are loved by me beyond description.
