In 2010, The
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation became a strategic partner of TEDx, both to
raise awareness around global health and development through
TEDxChange, and to develop programs to help bring new
information and ideas to under-developed communities. As a
part of this relationship, they also have offered scholarships
to selected TEDx organizers to experience an official TED
Conference.
The Gates Foundation underwrote the cost of bringing 15 TEDx organizers to TEDGlobal 2012 and 20 TEDx organizer to TEDActive 2013. The Gates Foundation covers the TEDx organizers' airfare, hotel, transportation to and from the venue and TED Conference registration fee.

What is TED?
TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.
The annual TED conferences -- held on the West Coast and in Edinburgh, Scotland -- bring together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes or less).
The best talks and performances from these TED conferences are made available to the world for free on TED.com. More than 1,000 TED Talks are now available, with more added each week.
These videos are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.
All of the talks are subtitled in English, as well as in other languages as part of the Open Translation Project.
We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. We're set on building a clearinghouse of free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers. We strive to bring together a community of curious souls to engage with ideas, and with one another.
Our mission: spreading ideas. Read more about TED's mission.
What is TEDx?
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission. The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
TEDx events -- either a screening of TED Talks videos, or a combination of live presenters and TED Talks videos -- spark deep conversations and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.
Since launching in March 2009, over 2,600 events have taken place with more than 1,200 events being planned currently. TEDx Organizers have held events in 115 countries and in 47 languages.
What is the TED conference?
TED is our flagship conference, which takes place on the North American West Coast. Previously based in Monterey, the conference moved to Long Beach in 2009, as the old venue could not accommodate the conference’s growth. In 2014 TED will take place in Vancouver, Canada.
In 2013, the conference runs from February 25 - March 1 . Read more about the TED2013 Conference.
What is TEDActive?
TEDActive is a parallel conference streaming talks from the TED stage and integrating multiple elements of interaction within the TEDActive community.
TEDActive takes places on the West Coast and runs from February 25-March 1. Read more about the TEDActive2013 Conference.
What is TEDGlobal?
TEDGlobal brings together global innovators -- the doers of the world making a difference in their communities and their professions -- to interact and learn from one another while absorbing talks from TED speakers.
TEDGlobal 2012 took place at the Edinburgh International Conference Center (EICC) in Edinburgh, Scotland from June 25–29, 2012. Read more about TEDGlobal 2012.
Why is the Gates Foundation investing in TEDx community building initiatives by funding TEDxChange Scholarships?
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation became a strategic partner of TEDx in 2010. They did so both to leverage the community to raise awareness around global health and development through their TEDxChange event, and to develop programs that bring new information and ideas to communities that might not otherwise have access.
As such, the Gates Foundation is underwriting the cost of bringing 20 TEDx event licensees to TEDActive in 2013. The Gates Foundation will pay the TEDx event licensee’s airfare, transportation to and from the venue, hotel, food and the TED conference registration fee – which is $2,500 for TEDActive.
After a conference ends, the TEDx organizers receiving scholarships return home, ready to implement the learnings from the conference locally in an effort to grow their TEDx community. It's important to note that by attending an official TED conference, the organizers receive the privilege of hosting a TEDx event with more than 100 attendees, thereby expanding the reach of TED and TEDx in their communities.
Who are the TEDx Organizers benefiting from this initiative?
The TEDx Organizers selected for this opportunity are from the developing world and emerging communities and have put endless hours into organizing TEDx events in their region.
They remain dedicated to building a platform where ideas are accessible to all in their community.
What do these TEDx Organizers learn from attending a TED conference?
For these organizers, attending a TED Conference is an opportunity of a lifetime.
At the conference they have the chance to:
- Network with thought leaders from around the world
- Network with TEDFellows and TED Prize winners
- Attend TEDx-specific workshops to learn and brainstorm with TED staff and other TEDx event organizers
These organizers also gain a renewed energy and dedication towards TEDx, thereby bringing more opportunities for idea sharing into their local communities.
Attending an official TED conference allows an individual to host a TEDx event with more than 100 attendees, thereby expanding the reach of TED and TEDx in their community.
