The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is a strategic partner of the TEDx program, and together we teamed up for a very special project called TEDxChange -- an initiative devoted to ideas worth spreading in the areas of global health and development. The TEDxChange team works with TEDx organizers around the world to help facilitate meaningful discussions on topics such as vaccines, polio, malaria, HIV/AIDS, maternal and newborn child health, and agricultural development. The TEDxChange initiative also includes a global signature event convened by Melinda Gates and broadcast across the TEDx community.
TEDxChange 2012 – April 5, 2012, live from Berlin
Convened by Melinda French Gates. Hosted by Chris Anderson.
The current economic climate has drawn our focus to immediate needs closest to home. But now, more than ever, it's critical to keep sight of the fact that we are part of interdependent, global community. And too many within that community cannot meet their most basic needs: food, clean water, life-saving medical treatment and vaccines.
We can't proceed with business as usual.
On April 5, 2012, we'll take a step back and look at the big picture: Why should we, as a society, continue to invest in global health and development? How can we work across borders and political boundaries to make positive change? And what returns can we expect on our investments?
Speakers
Melinda Gates: Melinda Gates serves as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She helps set the overall direction of the foundation, shaping strategies, reviewing results, and advocating for the foundation’s issues. Melinda will discuss family planning and how the power to plan changes the lives of women and their families and improves whole societies.
Jeff Chapin: Jeff Chapin is a mechanical engineer and product designer for IDEO. He specializes in designing sanitation solutions for the developing world and has conducted projects in both Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Jeff will challenge traditional perceptions of ‘design’ by emphasizing the importance of sustainable, market-based systems for developing societies.
Sven Giegold: Sven Giegold is a Member of the European Parliament and one of the founding members of Attac Germany. Sven has dedicated much of his career towards green industry issues. He will talk about the power of collective action and how the actions of individuals, communities, and progressive business can lead to critical changes at a national and international level.
Theo Sowa: Theo Sowa is an independent advisor and consultant, specializing in international social development with a particular emphasis on children’s rights and protection issues, especially in conflict situations. She is currently the Interim CEO of the African Women’s Development Fund, a pan African women’s grant making organization. Born in Ghana, she has lived and worked in many countries in Africa, as well as the UK, Europe, and the USA. Her work includes advisory roles to African and other international women and children’s rights activists and leaders, plus policy development and advocacy with a variety of international agencies and organizations.
Baaba Maal: Baaba Maal is a Senegalese singer and guitarist born in Podor, on the Senegal River. Baaba sings primarily in Pulaar and is the foremost promoter of the traditions of the Pulaar-speaking peoples. He has released several albums. In July 2003, Baaba was made a UNDP Youth Emissary. In March 2012 he visited Mauritania with Oxfam to call attention to the humanitarian need resulting from the food crisis in the Sahel. Also an Ambassador for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 campaign, he has become an increasingly vocal champion for the rights of women and girls.
Get involved
Overcoming global challenges takes global involvement; the conversation needs your voice! TED.com will make a free, live stream of TEDxChange available on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 5:30pm CEST -- you can watch and get involved in any of these four ways:
- Organize a TEDx event. Invite members of your community to watch the webcast (or archived stream!) and join the conversation. Review the TEDx guidelines, then sign up for a TEDxChange 2012 license »
- Join the global conversation. Follow TEDxChange on Facebook and Twitter.
- Watch the webcast. The entire 90-minute program will be streamed live on TED.com on April 5, 2012 at 5:30pm CEST. RSVP to the TEDxChange webcast event on Facebook »
- Attend a TEDx event. Many TEDx organizers have signed on to host events around the live webcast. Find a TEDx event near you »
Visit the TEDxChange site for more information and updates.
Hosting a TEDx event in collaboration with TEDxChange
If you're inspired by the premise of TEDxChange, we invite you to host a TEDx event in collaboration with TEDxChange in your community.
While we require you to show the full 90-minute program, we encourage you to program some local speakers. TEDxChange will be held on April 5th, 2012 at 5:30pm CEST. If this time doesn't work for your time zone, we encourage you to host an event around the archived stream on April 6.
Existing TEDx organizers
If you already have a TEDx license and want to host a TEDxChange type event, you'll need to apply for a license with your current name. Please remember to choose the "TEDxChange" event type when applying. You have the option to add the qualifier "Change" to your name (e.g. TEDxBeijingChange).Apply to organize a TEDx event »
First-time TEDx organizers
If you are organizing a TEDx event for the first time, you should apply with your proposed name, along with the qualifier "Change". Those applying for TEDx licenses for the first time, and who are applying for a TEDxChange type event, must apply with the "Change" qualifier on their name (e.g. TEDxBeijingChange).
Please note that TEDxChange type licenses expire immediately after the event takes place, and that a TEDxChange type event can only be held around the main TEDxChange event. Apply to organize a TEDx event »
Rules/Guidelines for TEDxChange
All other TEDx rules apply to TEDxChange type events, including these additional guidelines:
License
A TEDxChange type event must occur April 5th -- or within 24 hours (*please note exceptions will be made for developing world areas who will need to host around DVDs and/or countries where the 5:30pm CEST timing doesn't work) -- and must incorporate the entire TEDxChange livestream into its program. We encourage you to curate at least one session of local speakers as part of your TEDx event. A TEDxChange-type license expires immediately after the event happens, and can only occur around the main TEDxChange event.
Spirit/purpose
Your TEDx event in collaboration with TEDxChange must maintain the spirit of TED itself: cross-disciplinary, focused on the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. We recommend choosing a host who can seamlessly take your audience through your local program, and the main TEDxChange program.
Naming
If you are a first-time TEDx licensee, the official name of your event is TEDx(LocationName)Change. The qualifier “Change” must be a part of your name. All web properties and collateral must mirror this name exactly.
Existing TEDx licensees have the option to use the “Change” qualifier, or their standard TEDx event name when organizing their TEDxChange type event. ie: if you are an existing licensee your have the option of using TEDxAmsterdam or TEDxAmsterdamChange.
Logo
The logo of your TEDx event should reflect whichever name applies to your event. Eg. “TEDxAmsterdam” or “TEDxAmsterdamChange”. TEDxChange type event logos follow the standard TEDx logo guidelines.
Website
Existing TEDx licensees should organize your TEDxChange type event on a page on your existing website, and use existing web properties to promote the event. For licenses where this is their only event, create dedicated web properties -- Facebook, website, Twitter -- that reflect the proper name of your event, eg “TEDxStPetersburgChange”.
Promotion
In all communications to potential attendees and sponsors, it must be made clear that your event is independently organized around the live webcast of TEDxChange. Make it clear that and that your TEDx event is in collaboration with TEDxChange, and is not TEDxChange.
Positioning
We have created buttons and banners that show your event is in collaboration with, which you should add to your site. These buttons and banners cannot be modified in any way. You will receive these assets with your license approval. Never use the official “TEDxChange” logo, except in the context of these banners. At all times use your full TEDx event name.
Besides the standard “About TED/About TEDx” text, include the following copy wherever there is information on your TEDxChange type event:
TEDxChange 2012 is a TEDx event co-organized by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and TED. Convened by Melinda French Gates. Hosted by Chris Anderson. TEDxChange will focus on issues surrounding global health and development. TEDxChange type events are TEDx events hosted around the live webcast of TEDxChange, and also feature local speakers. Our event is called TEDx(EventName)(Change), and is one of many TEDx events happening around the globe on April 5th that will expand on the ideas brought up at TEDxChange 2010.
Programming
TEDx events held in collaboration with TEDxChange must show all of the livestream of TEDxChange.
Depending on your time zone, you'll have various ways to program your event around the live stream, as well as an option to program your own sessions before, during or after the program.
When working with time zone differences, be creative -- if your time zone doesn't align with the TEDxChange live stream, embrace the time difference by creating blocks of programming for segments when the live stream goes dark. Think of it as a way to accent, and build on, the experience. Consider these suggestions:
- Host a pre-program early session
- Host an afternoon session following the morning live-stream
- Build a programming around the archived webcast from the previous day
- Host an all-night party
Admission
You can charge admission to TEDxChange type events. All ticket prices must be submitted to TED for approval, and must be under $100.
Sponsorship
You may seek out sponsorship for your TEDx event, but the TEDx sponsorship rules apply.
Closing out your event
After your TEDxChange type event, besides completing the standard rules around closing out your event, you'll need to do the following:
1. Fill out the TEDxChange Event feedback form
2. Send the TEDxChange Event Feedback form to your attendees.
3. Upload photos to Flickr tagged "TEDxChange”
4. Include the tag “Change” in any videos that are uploaded to YouTube.
Email Becca@ted.com if you have any questions.
