  • An idea worth spreading

Throughout the ages we, as humans, have prided ourselves in the belief that we are unique and deserve a higher calling, that due to the possession of language, or other tools, we alone are privileged, however, in the face of substantial evidence, the body of which continues to grow, it is time that we took our rightful place, amongst all the other congregations of molecules, vying for stability, desiring only that dissipation of excess energy..No doubt, we have equipment that allows us to temporarily transcend the immediate fate of other, less complex interactions, (albeit that only a few of us seem to use it beneficially, and it is those that do not, that propagate such delusions of grandeur), and whilst there is a majority, that clings on to that heavenly, transcendental ideal, there is always going to be inequality and injustice or a moral and ethical law that benefits only those in power to enforce it..It's time we woke up and cast aside these unfounded, petty and peevish beliefs..

May 5 2008: "The problem is that evolution is not a fact, so, frankly, it doesn't matter what you believe either. "

    ???

"So the next time you tell someone that you love them, also tell them that you don't really love them, it's just a blind algorithmic process in your brain saying that you love them."

Just because this, may be the mechanism, by which, love occurs, that doesn't make love any less real..It is still a profound phenomenon, regardless..

"And violence brings wars. There is more violence today than ever before; there is more crime today than ever before. Awareness of good and evil brings more violence."

Actually, ignorance, power and the inability to rationalise in a conflict of interest, are what drive and motivate the violence..
  • A comment on Talk: Robert Wright on optimism

Feb 5 2008: You're looking at it all wrong Luis..No one is rationalising genocidal, dictatorial behaviour..One requires an understanding of the self anf the way in which it pursues it's goals, in order then, to understand the motives of another self..Not only does this pertain to our species, but that also pertains to others, for example, our understanding of ant colonies and other such, low food chain organisms, allows us to understand their place in the world and their importance nontheless..That in itself is a selfish interest, as it's this such information that we can use to find our place in this environment, it is these such tasks that will allow us to break the chains of our past follies and propagate a world in which ouur actions are for the better, ultimately for ourselves, but also for those that inhabit our environment with us..Isn't that the ideal of TED as a whole?? I believe so..

  • A comment on Talk: VS Ramachandran on your mind

Jan 26 2008: Brad, it's interesting that you should say that, as I remember watching a Horizon episode a couple of years back, dealing with brain interface topics..One in particular happened to be tests of such a mechanical arm on a rhesus monkey..I forget the name of the experimenter, however, they found that the monkey learned such a behaviour, in that it made the mechanical arm move by thought alone..I think the episode was called Human v.02 if you can find it..
