About me

I keep hoping other people will write my bio for me and make me out to be someone I'm not. But they never do, so I remain as I am... without a false identity.

Until then:

  • More about me

  • I'm passionate about

((( I deflect these types of questions. )))

  • Talk to me about

Something new - something that will surprise me, anything obscure, or a movie I should see.

  • People don't know that I'm good at

People often think I'm joking around when I'm actually at my most serious. Like, if you were to write a bio for me, even if we've never met, I would post it. Try me.

  • My TED story

I'm the "Director of Film + Video" for TED so I suppose my TED story involves dropping by to visit the TEDquarters something like 5 or 6 weeks before TED2006 and never leaving.

People often ask me what my job title means. A TEDTalk isn't just some random speech filmed with a camera in the back of the room like a junior high play. A lot of care and consideration goes into how we rehearse, light, frame, edit, and present each talk to bring the same emotional and intellectual impact to your computer that you'd feel at TED, in the theater, sitting fifteen feet away from the presenter.

Over to the right I'm supposed to pick a few of my "favorite talks" which is painfully difficult because I love all my children, but as with real children, some are intrinsically more adorable than others.

If you've read this far... here's a doc we produced taking you behind the scenes at TED to show just what goes in to the making of a TEDTalk - http://blog.ted.com/2009/07/go_behind_the_s.php

Apr 7 2007: if you're in new york, i highly recommend the PS1 retrospective... after watching this talk it's such a treat to see the works up close
  • A comment on Talk: Hans Rosling shows the best stats you've ever seen

Apr 6 2007: don't want to spoil any of the surprises... i'd rather let the material speak for itself... just give this talk three minutes or so (because you won't be able to stop there)
  • A comment on Talk: Jeff Han demos his breakthrough touchscreen

Apr 6 2007: it's so rare for a computer to evoke an authentic feeling of awe... when i walked up to his latest, 8-foot model at TED 2007 there were three or four other people fooling around with it and we all just did our own thing for a few minutes. it felt perfectly natural (and really cool).
