Talk: Peter Hirshberg on TV and the web– December 13, 2008
The final death blow to TV will come with the arrival of "virtualization convergence." Virtualization Convergence occurs when "virtualization of the workspace" (aka "web technology ") and "virtualization of the workforce" (aka"virtual organization management") reach a state of equilibrium.
This doesn't mean that the TV will cease to exist completely, it's just that it will cease to exist as we now know it. Just as the PC ceased to exist from a utilitarian standpoint the way we knew it then, back in the early 80's. Not many of us thought back then that the computer would be used today for so many uses, e.g., business, science, medicine, entertainment, politics, public policy, broadcasting, journalism, servers, the spread of viruses and trojans and worms, telecommunications, teleconference, video conference, INTERNET, etc.
TV will be completely integrated into the web so that when we sit in front of our TV set, we will be surfing the net for all sort of programming that will be delivered over the web. Moreover, the TV set will be more a combination of computer, cable box, dvd, video conference tool, video phone, sophisticated brain system for the entire home.
However, without the development of a common PC architecture, a set of Internet Protocols for accessing the internet, the rally around both a [main] OS and a standard markup language for communicating over the internet, [[ ALL STANDARDS ]], we would not have been able to make the sort of progress made over the past 30 years. CHAOS would have been the order of the day.
In a sense, this is where we are today, in a state of Virtual Chaos. In order to reach that state of equilibrium, we need to develop STANDARDS on how to "operate" in this virtual environment and that's what VIRTUAL ORGANIZATION MANAGEMENT brings to the table. Once we reach that state of equilibrium, Virtualization Convergence will take place and TV as we now know it will cease to exist.
