How can we create a situation, where more people or even everyone has access to basic goods?

in a state economy. in a free market economy, which the USA more or less had in the 19th century, and the beginning of the 20th century, GDP measures very well what worthwhile. not all of it, but large part of it. more precisely, GDP measures (in a free market economy!) all worthwhile things that are scarce but can be produced and exchanged.

however. charity did and do have its role in fighting poverty. just ask any of the acumen fund's or kiva's partners. ask any child that got vaccination thanks to the gates foundation, or back in time, look the rockefeller foundation, the list is endless.
correction: we don't have more poor than ever. we have much much less. the last century or two centuries were probably the most successful period of mankind. if we could continue that trend, there would be no poor at the end of this century.
and that is why the last thing we need is any "adjustment" to the system that delivered such wonderful results. any attempt to "fix" the problems actually creating them. the series of "fixing" happened in the last century has gradually managed to stall economic progress in the west. and now these ideas seek their way to the east to wreak havoc there too.

How can that be?

I think you nailed it : 'another world '.
Different eyes see different frequencies. And differently interpret what they see.
I observe it every day :)

let me guess: none of these. you just picked up some slogans uttered by politicians and/or activist groups. you chose a side. you have opinion without knowledge.
it is not my job to change that, you are right about that. but i find it very dangerous. this attitude causes the very suffering we (allegedly) try to combat. and while there are some signs that knowledge do spread, i find it painfully slow, and the opposing view gains ground faster.

Lots of studies have been done on the issue. Did you ever see one?

you can continue to bury your head in the sand, but a TED member should know better. since Hans Rosling showed us how the world really looks like, there is no excuse. if you don't know, you either didn't listen, or you just push a propaganda.

actually, i don't know. i didn't look it up, since it does not matter.

this might help: 1800, USA, average GDP per capita, inflation adjusted: 2000 per year
