    Mar 6 2011: While advertisement may have a great deal to do with its popularity, I suspect it goes back to the days of the Roman games, maybe even further. A large amount of humans enjoy blood sports. Even slowing down at an accident scene to view the crash & victims. Football serves this same purpose as does NASCAR & PBR among others.

      Mar 8 2011: I think he's talking about world football (soccer). Ironically its true that even American football is probably more famous than our other sports (it's a close call for baseball).
