TED2013 Worldwide Auditions: Open Thread

From April - June 2012, TED will hold public auditions in 14 cities on six continents seeking to uncover new talents, voices and ideas the world needs to hear: emerging trailblazers, under-celebrated sages, hidden geniuses.

    I wish to present a TED talk(either in TED2013 or as a separate TEDx Event) on "importance of movies and music artists in every individual lives and our responsibilities towards celebrities". Kindly let me know what are the procedures that needs to be done from my end.
    I also have other TED talks lined up. I have also got myself nominated as a speaker by prominent TED members . "Bangalore , India" is a preferred place where I wish to give a TED talk.I am okay to give at another location also .

    May 9 2012: Vancouver auditions are less than a month away, however I have not received any email one way or the other. Has the decision been made? Are you sending responses to everyone including those who did not make it?

    May 4 2012: If I have not heard back about my New York audition application should I assume I didn't get picked? It's been a little over 2 wks since the deadline.

    I've been giving some thought to evaluation for the auditions - it looks from your website, and from comments by Nick, that the plan is to have people vote on finalists...

    I hope and am sure that TED can figure out a way to make this work better than most of these "vote for me! vote for me!" situations, which too often end up being more about the number of connections on social media than the content. Most people don't have time or energy to watch more than a few talks, and they're also far more inclined to vote for their friends.

    One suggestion: Maybe there's a way to sign people up to receive 3 or 4 randomly selected audition videos per week (day?) and rate them by some metric? Or maybe play them against one another, round-robin style? ... not sure... also, evaluating across categories of talks.... hard to compare apples with oranges in the best of situations.

    Anyway, worth some further thought, & I'm sure this community can come up with fantastic ways to help your team evaluate. Would be happy to discuss further.

    (I know it's a bit of a conflict of interest to mention this, given that I did an audition in Doha, but it's a concern that was brewing before I decided to participate, so not much sense in holding it back).

    It was great to see you in Doha, and to remember @Aspen!... Hope the auditions are going well. Thanks so much for this opportunity - I had a blast, and preparing the talk really helped me put more structure to the work I do.

    Apr 19 2012: Hii, I applied from Shanghai, China. It was written on the website (for China) that we would be notified of acceptance or rejection by the week of April 9th. It's been past the week of April 9 and I have not heard from anyone. If someone could please confirm my acceptance or rejection, or whether my video got submitted in the first place or not. Would really appreciate a reply. Thanks.

    Also, I have an idea - The selected 1 minute vids and later the 6 min auditions should also be shared with the world.

    Feb 9 2012: Hi Kelly, thanks for the info. Yes Tunisia is closer, however flights to London from Malta are significantly cheaper than to Tunisia, that's why I'm thinking about applying there.

    Feb 6 2012: I live in New Zealand. My closest centre is in Sydney. If I was selected to audition I understand that I am footing the travel bill. So in that case, can I choose another centre? Like New York!

      You can apply to audition at any of the events you'd like, as long as you pick only one.

      For anyone else who may read this ... TED may cover travel to an audition in exceptional cases, but applicants who cannot afford to cover their own travel should apply to the audition event nearest to them.

    Feb 6 2012: I represent someone who I think would make a great speaker. Just to clarify, we are in Oshawa, Ontario. We make an audition video and if he makes top 30 finalists, will be invited for "in person" audition in New York or Vancouver? Or you need to be in that city to audition? Thanks

      Feb 6 2012: Speakers don't have to live in the city to which they are applying. However, we encourage them to submit a 1-minute video only the event closest to them. 30 finalists will be chosen from each city and invited to present live.

      Feb 6 2012: He would need to apply for either New York or Vancouver (it doesn't matter to us which one -- but ONLY ONE; each city will have a separate application form), and then if selected as a finalist, would be invited to give the talk in person in front of a live audience at the event in that city.
