Can bio-inspired, human-powered aircraft fly farther than the 74 mile record established more than 22 years ago?
Our manufacturing techniques are much more sophisticated now. A company called CSIRO in Australia has been able to synthesize the same protein that insects use to fly. The material is a highly efficient elastic energy storage device. TED is chock full of talks on bio-inspired design. Perhaps a way forward for us as a species is to boldly step away from the automobile and engineer our way into the sky.
