How can I discover endless possibilities inside of myself? And how can I foster their growth?

Everyone has their own talents.
Some develop their own gifts effectively and passionately, but others fail to develop their talents for many excuses, such as lack of interest, passion and efforts.

In some cases, people cannot discover their boundless potentialities because of their families circumstances or unfortunate social conditions or rigid social structures that are so discouraging to the people who want to be creative.

Regardless of these circumstances, how can we shift obstacles out of our way and find our infinite possibilities and foster their growth?

Personally, I think it's not easy to remove all of the obstacles, especially when they are simple beyond my ability. So what I do in order to discover my potentialities is leaving their traces whenever I notice them.

For instance, while watching a movie, I write "something" that crossed my mind in my diary so that I can catch my inspiration on the spot without sparing extra time.

    Jan 5 2012: Hi Elizabeth..

I believe We all feel there exist "endless possibilities inside of ourselves", but if we check deeply what "endless possibilities" means. I can say it means things we can imagine and things we can't.
In this world, We have discovered things that we've never imagined before. so maybe what You are doing "now" is part of the "endless possibilities"... so there is not reason to do not give it all your energy..

Jan 3 2012: I gree with Varlan Allan, just try to do some different somes. There are some words from the main actress in the movie --" I just wanna have the time to figure out who it is that I am. You know, what I like. Do things, try things...'" I agree with her words. I also want to find out what I like, who I am. That is what I am always trying.
And why I like TED, two reasons. First, here are so many excellent people from different fields. They share good ideas. Watch the vedio on TED will change my minds, just like give me fresh engery on my mental level. That is what I really like. Second, you can share idea with different people here. To discuss many things with them. Cos I appreciate my grow up on the mental level. So I just feel so happy that I can find TED.

Jan 2 2012: I realize that snobs cannot discover their infinite possibilities since they don't listen to others and don't admit the fact that they still have to brush up their knowledge. I guess only a person who has a humble mind and tries to learn more from everything that surrounds him can get opportunities to find his potential values.

Therefore, I feel necessity to take a more modest attitude in order to learn and realize more in this TED site and this conversation :)

Jan 2 2012: I think social structure and that’s influence is also essential for discovering one’s potentialities.
In Korea, most of the students go to ‘hagwon’(private educational institute) in order to get higher scores in their exams than they have now and enter the famous universities. More importantly, our education curriculum and most parents’ ways of thinking are the main factors that encourage young students to go with the flow. In this situation, some students have cynical attitudes toward our education system and try to be creative and find their own purposes. However, other students study hard in order to keep up with the superior students and be successful than their peers. For them, rather than telling them to ‘be passionate’ and ‘do what they want to do’, telling them to stand up to society and be nonconformists would be more helpful to discover their potential possibilities.
Although recently, there have been some positive changes in our education, still, there are quite many students who don’t even have dreams. I believe that depending on each student’s attitude, the students can either succeed in discovering their distinct potentialities or they can’t even get a chance to ponder about themselves. However, discovering one’s own potentialities is not just up to him/her. Social support and encouragement are also crucial for him/her to find their endless possibilities. Aside from Korean education system, social influence can affect one’s life.
Like Nazism, if one person is under the social control—especially if it's so forceful that it prevents one’s personal growth, he/she can’t even realize the fact that he/she has infinite possibilities inside of himself/herself since the society forces him/her to follow the crowd—even worse, the social control limits one person’s way of thinking, which means you don’t even feel necessity to find your own potentialities because of the rigid way of thinking that embedded by the society. I want to hear your opinions about this.

        Jan 3 2012: Hi, Pierre
'Nothing can limit your thought but yourself'-- you are right. But my point is not about my personal complaining. And it's frustrating that I didn't explain well enough about my country's social context--maybe it's because of my lack of English. And with all due respect, I suspect that you've misunderstood my point.Social control is not just a forceful command, but also that could define one person's way of thinking and implant stereotype--literally, kill one person's creativity whether it's intentional or not. I think 'Nothing can limit your thought but yourself' is a kind of naive opinion. I would agree, but sometimes social influences are as crucial as one person's efforts. By the way, I will see the movies you recommended.
        Thanks!

        Sincerely,
        Elizabeth

Jan 3 2012: You don't need to apologize 'cause your idea was good.

But I think my post was not that incomprehensible.

( I guess the problem is not about grammatical mistakes.
So, google translater wouldn't necessary. Thanks for the advice, btw)

I suppose my point just didn't make sense to you.

Now that you could understand the point of my another post--the second one,

I want to hear your opinion.

        What do you think?

Jan 2 2012: For me, I will try to think more and try different ways. Such as for learning, I will try many different ways to see which way will be more efficient and can catch my interest to make it takes more longer. Because for different people, they have different unique talent, some will be more active for images, or some will be more effcient for sounds and so on. And read many books about psychology can help too. That will make us to know ourselves better. Besides, talk with others, share ur ideas can find some new things too. Sometimes, sharing ur idea is one way to remind youself to process ur thinking, to let urself to understand what u really interested in, or what u r really are. So I think TED is really a good enviroment for different thought.

      Tell me about it.
Participating in TED site is one of the great ways to discover your potentialities.
  • Jan 2 2012: Your quote of rigid social structures is very informative. Korean society has evolved in the matter of females but still can be improved upon. I was there with the military and understand, from my limited ability, how you may become discouraged. I believe that sites like TED, internet resources, your personal experiences will all contribute to allow you to see your passions. Sometimes we look to hard and ignore what is before us. You cannot make this happen. Education is not a goal but rather a journey. Enjoy the trip and you will find your answer.

Colleen offers good advice. I also like Varian's approach. Do what works for you. The best of luck.

Jan 2 2012: 'Education is not a goal but rather a journey. Enjoy the trip and you will find your answer.'
      You are absolutely right.
When I treated education as an amusing thing, it became one of my possibilities, but when I treated it as a compulsory goal, it became one of the obstacles that prevent me from finding my endless possibilities.

    Jan 1 2012: Hi Elizabeth,
I've found in the exploration of life, that there are many different factors involved while discovering the endless possibilities inside our "self". I think/feel that Zared gives us the first step...."remove all doubts or distractions in your mind, harness the passion within, and use that passion to do what you want to do". Do what you love, and/or love what you're doing. If we are in the moment with passion and interest, we can always learn something, so the energy is well spent no matter what we are doing.

Varlan gives us the next steps...try things, combine multiple abilities, explore various interests, try some jobs in different fields, follow your heart, and believe in yourself. There are no mistakes, there are only explorations. In my perception, everything is an opportunity to learn, grow and evolve...have fun with the process:>)

        Jan 7 2012: Hi Elizabeth,
Yes...have fun with the process. Sometimes, we take ourselves much too seriously and get "stuck". I've learned to work/play with life challenges, and it leaves me open to more possibilities:>)

          Jan 9 2012: Hi Colleen,
there are so many things that I can learn from your comments.
I suppose I need more experiences that would give me more opportunities to discover my endless possibilities.
And I realize that sometimes I need "guts" to face with difficulties so that I can enjoy the process and learn valuable lessons from them!

          :D

        Jan 9 2012: Elizabeth,
Thank you...we can learn with each other:>) Yes...more experiences...more opportunities to discover endless possibilities. And as Yuri insightfully reminds us, we are doing that right here and now on TED! Your profile says..." I visit TED in order to quench my THIRST". Just keep being thirsty for knowledge with an open heart and mind, and enjoy the process of learning:>) Yes, sometimes it takes "guts" to face life experiences, and I think/feel that you have "guts" Elizabeth:>)

Jan 1 2012: You won't fully realize all your talents or potentials until they are shown to you. I only learned now that my greatest abilities are made of combining multiple abilities I've learned over time. I did a degree in fine art, but I love reading, and I love children and have worked with them for almost 5 years.

I see now that this has led me to become a graphic designer and a creator of books and curriculum.
I never had any idea that I'd be good at such things. But it only took me 28 years to get here, and I'm sure i'll discover more ways find myself useful.

Maybe try working in different fields. Being a phone operator will teach you good speaking and selling abilities. Enter some free tournaments in dance and see how well you fair. Work as a secretary to improve your memory and organizational skills. Work in construction and you will learn about proper angles and materials. And in the end you may end up combining these things to become an architect or interior designer! You never know what you will become or what you are good at without trying things.

    Good luck.

Jan 2 2012: Like the proverb: Well begun is half done, encouraging!
  • Jan 1 2012: Remove doubt, harness passionate, and do what you want to do.
    • thumb
Jan 1 2012: Good idea, but that sounds a little bit abstract. Can you tell me your own story? You know, the story of how you've found your potentialities --specifically.
      • Jan 1 2012: There is not always a story with every lesson. My concept above just tells you to remove all doubts or distractions in your mind, harness the passion within, and use that passion to do what you want to do. Also, always think realistic because being only optimistic or pessimistic is just delusional.
