Is tissue engineering the future of medicine? Es la ingenieria de tejidos el futuro de la medicina?

Se deberia invertir tiempo y dinero en la financiación de este tipode ingenieria de tejidos que tienen como objectivo la regeneración de estos para la cura de organos? O suena mas bien utópico?

Should we Invest in tissue enineering time and money to cure organs troughtout tissure regeneration? Or it is a utopia?

    Jan 5 2012: It is not an impossible dream. Currently, we can produce skin, bone, arteries... simple stuff. Micro-kidneys to assist renal function and pancreatic cells to produce extra insulin are possible (in lab rats today). I believe, fairly soon, we will produce artificial organs. These organs that will not be simple clones of our organs, but bioengineered to enhance our biological function from modified adult stem cells and advanced materials.

      • Jan 1 2012: That is only for prevention. Being positive cannot cure gastritis. Tissue regeneration is possible if we invest more in stem cells or a similar branch of that concept.

          Jan 1 2012: Yes, but you know that ethically treatment with stem cells is not well seen, but, yes it's important to invest in this kind of cells, we have to awareness the society that the life expectancy is increasing everyday, we live more year than the last century, and we are bumping against new degenerative problems and illness.

        • Jan 2 2012: Zared, are you sure that being positive cannot cure gastritis? Do you prefer pharmaceuticals to natural approaches to curing ills? If stress causes illness, it seems logical that feeling good can cure illness. Power to the positive!
        • Jan 4 2012: Mr. Fernadez Garcia, I advise you to see the TED talk about blindness exposed by Sheila Nirenberg. In a part of the conference, she talks about how they are reaching to reboost cells from adipose tissue. This reboost will allow us to reprogramme those cells which would become stem cells again. In this point, ethical problem may not be present.
      • Jan 1 2012: Some of them are new, some of them were dormant, and other illnesses and degenerative problems were recently discovered by means of more efficient tests and screenings. Either way, the concept above is the only way tissue regeneration exists today.
      • Jan 2 2012: Yes, I prefer pharmaceuticals then natural. I am sure concentrated substances work better than non-concentrated substances. Also, not all illnesses are caused by stress such as HIV or cancer. Feeling good does not always mean that your body is healthy. Always being a positive thinker causes you to be in a illusion of happiness then reality. It is logical to think like a realistic thinker by rationalizing situations instead of numbing them down.
  • Jan 28 2012: Tissue engineering is not a Utopia. Is one of the paths of medical sciences, sooner or later it will be real. When i was a boy cloning was a subject of Sci-Fi stories. Now its real, the same comes to tissue engineering.

    Jan 27 2012: is it the future? yes, i hope so it'd come in our lifetime.

    is it panacea? no, since many diseases should be addressed in combination therapy, and tissue regeneration has its limitations.

    is it worth the capital for research? well i'm pretty sure it'd come out as expensive for the patient at first, but a decade later into utility, it may be turn out to be worth the initial investment.

    when is this gonna happen? every month or so, we read published articles about small successes in xenotransplantation, but we haven't heard of major news in mainstream outlets about this.. yet.

    for as long as there is no definitive cure to a disease, i think we should not stop believing in the potential of cell research.

    Jan 4 2012: Definitely yes! As Juan Enriquez points out in his TED talk on "mindboggling science" the three fields that will change us in the time to come are - engineering cells, tissues and robots.
