How would you feel if your government was going to ban the use of your "Mother tongue" on TV?

Starting next year the Chinese Government will be making it illegal to speak on TV and all schools the Cantonese language in Guangzhou. All Cantonese programmes will need to be broadcast in Mandarin.

There are about about 71 million people worldwide that speak Cantonese and of course most of these live in Guangdong Province and nearby Hong Kong.

If this is successful in stamping out Cantonese in Guangzhou will Hong Kong be next target for the Chinese government as Cantonese is the official language there.

    It happened in Canada, when Quebec did the above.

    My children moved out of the province.

    Dec 28 2011: I'm sorry to hear that, it will be a hardship on a lot of people but you are better off not watching it anyway. It's all government controlled and you are only getting the information they want you to get. I would stop watching T.V. if I lived in your country.
