Dec 19 2011: Hey Jam Good One!!!

Here is the merriam webster defiinition

at one time I was very attracted to the world "weltschmertz" ( spelling?) a sort of grieving for the world, carrying the grief of the world in one's own heart.. a very timely second cousin to your word

fun to say..a complex and powerful meaning

I shall appropraite it , if you don't mind..and use it
      • Dec 20 2011: Hi Lindsay. I appreciate your thought.

I tend to associate it with Nietzsche’s stand on faith and the pursuit of truth, either worldviews which are bound to save or destroy us.

“Every true faith is infallible. It performs what the believing person hopes to find in it. But it does not offer the least support for the establishing of an objective truth. Here the ways of men divide. If you want to achieve peace of mind and happiness, have faith. If you want to be a disciple of truth, then search.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche

Dec 21 2011: Hi Jam, really appreciate the quote by Nietzsche.
        • thumb
          Dec 21 2011: Yes Jam,

an important seek truth and hear truth we must first put aside all that keeps us from that:
          a need for certainty
          a need for security

although often enough, thank goodness, truth is a penetrating laser that pierces though all that an dplants its seed in the human heart dissolving all these obstacles until they no longer exist or are even remembered.once in a very great while this happens simultaneously to many all over the earth
      • thumb
Dec 21 2011: And a first cousin to that might be "schadenfreude," which is more or less getting a kick out of the weltschmertz.
        • thumb
Dec 21 2011: oh dearPaul....I trust this is not your state of mind or an invitation to schaenfreude..I am extending back in any event an invitation to create "conviviocrcay"

          Peace & Hope

Dec 19 2011: My favorite word: love.

    Dec 19 2011: EMANATE

I find I use it all the time expresses an emergence of something that was already there, a process of growing, unfolding as from a seed towards flowering and fruit, it implies an unfolding..seems to contain.convey more than simply saying "evolve" or discovering"..

it wasn't a conscious choice to use that word..I just came to see it as the word that describes the new way of seeing , observing, listening that is emanating within me in siutations weher I might in other days have used "evolving" or "growing"

Whenever we "put on a new mind" we find that the words we used to use don't quite contai the meaning or content we nowwant our speaking to have and quite uninintentionally we srtart using new and different words.

EMANATE is definitely a word I now find I use often.

Interestingly whenever I use it in normal conversation it also creates a small shift in awreness, attention, consideration that other more commonly used words do not.

Dec 15 2011: Pixelated, I heard it first as a child in the movie "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" with Gary Cooper, two elderly ladies use it to describe everyone they know. Their meaning is one who is adversely affected by pixies. Over time, as I have meet more and more people, I tend to agree but with a variance on the meaning. We are all made of many parts coming together to form a whole and unique image. Often we only see parts, pixels of people and because of our inability to see the whole, all people are pixelated, all things are pixelated, all knowledge, everything is PIXELATED! ! ! ! ! Silly pixies.

Dec 14 2011: Hey Seo Rim Kim,

This is an awesome question! I've debated this topic with many people in the English teaching community, and it seems like everyone has a unique and amazing answer. Already cited, but exceptionally beautiful words would include infinity, oblivion, and facetious...(All amazing) However, as controversial as it might seem to the TED community, I would have to cite the F-word as one of my all-time favorites. Before an uproar ensues, I would like to clarify that this word can be used both negatively and positively, and does not always need to be an ugly thing. English is largely stripped of truly expressive words (the ones that you would yell if you were in pain)

While other words certainly contain more eloquence and pomposity, meaning and insightfulness, the 'f' word is sometimes just fun to say.
***As a postscript, I would like to clarify that overuse of this word can make one's speech ugly, seem ignorant, and uneducated***
    Thanks for the great question!
    • thumb
      Dec 14 2011: Thanks Sam :)

I'm getting a few of these actually. Words can be used in many ways, and one of them happens to be derogatory for the F-word.
I understand why you like the F word the most, and I get that your points are very solid.
      thanks for the postscript :P

Dec 15 2011: Mine is 'Humblness.'

It does not mean lowering any of self-esteem; instead it is related to a sort of life-attitude assuming that there are always lots of people who are better than I am. With the word, I think we can more naturally enjoy life. That is why I like 'humbleness.'

Dec 15 2011: KwangYu, I liked your word.
Humility is a quality many humans lack because they see it as a weakness. But it is not so.

A person can achieve a state of humility by reasoning on his relationship to God and to his fellowmen, or humility can be forced on them by others, such as when one is humiliated in front of a crowd.

In my opinion it is much more rewarding to cultivate the quality of humility. Putting others first, and not insisting on having your way brings much happiness.

Thank you for your entry. I really enjoyed reading it.

    Dec 14 2011: Anecdote (obviously fake) :)

"There was a world-conference about in what language "I love you" sounds the best. The invited Hungarian linguists were in trouble, because in Hungarian "I love you" is "Szeretlek", which has "r" and "tl" in it, it is too harsh for a word with such a beautiful meaning. So they decided to go with the word "halolaj", which sounds awesome in Hungarian, with "l"s and "j"s, which are really smooth. Only problem was that it means fish oil. But they won."

When it comes to English... my favorite word is "appreciate".

  • Dec 22 2011: I went to a Vipassana retreat last fall and all the agony of sitting still for hours and dealing with nothing but my head had me go through time periods where every human sound and word felt just painful, feeling either too distant or too close to me. But all through my meditation, whenever I heard Goenka say 'diligently' I felt better. The first part 'dili' sounds kind of funny the way it makes your tongue bounce and reminds the Finnish word 'kili' which means a babygoat. Goats happen to also be quite bouncy in a magickly light way, making climbing unstable mountains seem as easy as breathing. Despite the lightness of the word it still has a certain underlying paternal severity to it that is quite a different kind from 'persistance'. 'Persistance' sounds more like a tree being slapped by the wind and it receiving the beating rather passively until the winds decide to stop. It sounds a bit hopeless and impersonal in comparison. 'Diligently' is distinctly charged with a will and perhaps an intent. It sounds like somebody walking against the wind on their way home, making a constant choice to take a step and another one for as long as it takes and constantly asessing the changes in the situation. And the word ends with a 'gently', how can you not like that? So yes, for now, Diligently.

Dec 21 2011: I mostly consider a word as the one I like when it sounds amusing.
For example, I like German word selbstverstaendlich, it's long (in English, one can say simply 'sure'), and the way it sounds amuses me a little.
There are lots of funny Russian words (to me), many of them seem to have so friendly and funny aura in the way they sound. For example, shlepa (a hat) and lots more.
Also, German 'Haloechen and Spanish 'Holasito' (this one is my invention, instead of hola), which mean hello in a veeery sweet manner, always make me smile when I say it. Nor me, neither many other people like such 'sweetness', that's why it's so amusing to me...

  • Dec 14 2011: Deliquesce: to melt or become liquid by absorbing moisture form the air or via decomposition.

It doesn't come up that often in the litteral sense, but it's brilliant when used metaphorically. It sounds lovely and is great fun to say.

Philtrum: the small groove between your nose and upper lip.

Most people know the names of our facial features (eyes, nose, cheeks, etc.), but this one is sadly underused. It's also fun to say.

Dec 14 2011: I am not sure if this is correct or not perhaps someone can verify the source but I was once told the F word is really an acronym Fornication Under Command of the King. Seems in the history of old England under the rule of Norman kings this was the practice. The govenor or local ruler was given the First right to bed any virgin before marriage under his jurisdition. Thus it seems the origin of this word certainly has dubious beginnings.Perhaps its reason for being a word so vilified in the English language.

Dec 14 2011: It might have to be "tintinnabulation," the sound of small bells. It's used in a poem by Edgar Allan Poe: "The Bells." An example of onomatopoeia, which has to be another great word. And speaking of onomatopoeic words, something as simple as "buzz" has a certain buzz.

Dec 14 2011: I will probably get a lot of flack for this but my favorite word is F*CK. As vulgar and primitive as it may be, it is a word that can be applied to countless situations and at times be said when there is nothing to be said. What other word in the English language evokes such emotion while is so open for interpretation? What other word can be used to describe making love while also expressing the hate at the bottom of one's heart? What other word can anger or threaten one human being while instantaneously form a heart to heart connection with another? You can love the word or hate it. Either way, one cannot deny that it makes you feel something.

    F*CK is beautiful word
    • thumb
Dec 14 2011: haha this is good :)
first, thanks for the candor Dylan. And yeah, you are making a good point. Words are supposed to provoke an image or a feeling in others, and I guess the word "F**K" would seem rightfully doing its job.

      ah, the beauty of language.

but I do not like anymore than I like the word devotion because your right, it does entail something that is deep and rich...but i'm interested as to why you like macaroon? is it because its food? lol
        • thumb
Dec 16 2011: haha I also have no clear reason why I like the word macaroon.

"Anhedonia" is ironically a pleasure to say.

"Circulus vitiosus deus" - Latin phrase, coined by Nietzsche, 'god is a vicious circle'.

    • Dec 14 2011: I looked Anhedonia up and learned a new word. I think I know someone who suffers from this. Happily, most of my friends, acquaintances and people I just say hello to, don't.

      • thumb
Dec 13 2011: I think they sound so beautiful, especially quintessence. Felinity is another beautiful word that's one of my favorite. In some ways they all apply to how I feel about myself.

Precocious was a word that a favorite teacher taught me. She called me that one day and when I discovered its meaning it did a lot for my confidence as a kid to really believe in myself and my abilities.

The meaning of Quintessence is just beautiful to me. I love this word and its definition.

Felinity...well I love big cats and the way they move. Felinity is the closest I'll ever get to describing their movement.

        Dec 13 2011: Anonymous

Staying anonymous gives me the complete freedom to do anything without being tracked.

I hate it when some people try to find everything they can about me

How do you feel when people Google 'Rachel Seo Rim Kim' and find that..1,2,3,4,5...... (even if everything was good, you'd like to have some privacy, Don't you??)

I want to help in improving the world, but I don't want to be a celebrity :P

        Yes, conan :P
Change your username to 'Ran' :P
        • thumb
Dec 13 2011: staying anonymous has it perks yes, but leaving comments with your real name has its own perks too. In Korea, for example, people have abused that anonymity and left personal attacks on the Internet. A handful of celebrities, unfortunately, committed suicide over the past decade. It's truly sad that people sometimes abuse something that could be used to make a better society as you have pointed out. But it's also a side of anonymity that you might want to consider.

I would like some privacy, yes. But there's always two sides to things, you know.
