What do you have to be grateful for today?

Does this need an explanation?

Dec 27 2011: I am grateful for the change in mindset I am going through over the past few years (and I am grateful to see others who are already in it and also going through it). As a surgeon in my old mindset, I saw less and less hope, increasing fear and frustration in my profession and in the world. In a renewed mindset, I see hope and opportunity for change. I see love everywhere and I am driven less and less by fear.

      Dec 27 2011: Bruce,
I am grateful that you can now see love everywhere:>)

        Le Petit Prince
    • Dec 31 2011: Bruce,
Thank you for expressing your feelings so candidly. Your words resonated in me as I am struggling with aging parents with old mindsets. I hope that like you, they will be helped to see life positively with the help we are giving them.

Love is everywhere!....."Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine" Lord Byron
I thought you would enjoy this quote, being a surgeon.

Dec 28 2011: I'm grateful to find the words to express my opinions and a community to share my stories. It's been a tough year with hard lessons, yet I'm more hopeful about the days ahead.
    • thumb
      Dec 28 2011: Dear Katherine,
It appears that some difficult lessons in the past are going to be replaced with a new beginning in the coming year. I'm grateful for your insight:>)
    • Dec 31 2011: Katherine, I liked your expression....."I'm hopeful about the days ahead".

It reminded me of a quote: "Worry is the misuse of your imagination"

      All my best, Mary

Dec 26 2011: Each day, I am greatful of being alive.

Being alive I keep all the memories than made me as I am and I have the chance to keep building my next version of myself, improving day by day.

      Dec 29 2011: I agree Luis,
I am grateful for the life experiences as they come to me, that keep building and improving day by day:>)

  • Dec 25 2011: My autistic son. He is 13 and he does not know how he has positively changed the world for the three of us - my daughter, wife and I.
The change is fantastic and we are all grateful to him.
    • Dec 31 2011: Syed, what a priveledge to know that there are positive people who have taken a challenging situation and see it with loving eyes.....All the best to you and your family.

Dec 31 2011: I am grateful that my closest friend is recovering amazingly well from a difficult surgery called the "Whipple" procedure. I am also grateful that we have had each other to lean on due to health issues between the two of us. I am extremely grateful that I met and married my soulmate, without whom I'd be in a lot of trouble today.

What has been hardest, and therefore the most difficult, to accept and find a way to be grateful for, is my ability to accept what comes. In the last three years I've acknowledged and yet denied I had an illness. After finally seeing a neurologist who put it bluntly ("You'll always have these symptoms," he said. "It's not something that will go away, even with preventative medication."), I realized that even though I don't yet have a diagnosis, I do have some sort of degenerative neurological disease similar to Multiple Sclerosis. It's what folks call "a probable MS'er" in the forums.

So, in order to be grateful for something like that, and realizing that any day I could wake up with some crazy new symptom that could change my life yet again, I found I could be *grateful for the fact that I was taught how to stay happy and that I inherited blind optimism from my parents*.

It'll all work out, even if it's not the way we planned.
    • thumb
      Jan 1 2012: Dear Rebecca,
Your ability to stay happy with optimism is a HUGE gift to all of us, and I agee that "it'll all work out, even if it's not the way we planned". Sometimes, life happens when we're making other plans! I understand that, since I'm not supposed to be alive...according to the medical model:>) You hang in there Rebecca...love you and am grateful for your presence here and now.

Dec 31 2011: I'm grateful to see my chindren grow. I am grateful for the good that I'm eating to right now.
  • thumb
Dec 29 2011: I'm grateful for all the people that helped me all the way up to today. I wouldn't be here, right now without their help. I like to think that I would be able to do all things on my own, but I'm glad that I don't have to.
    • thumb
      Jan 5 2012: Dear Darren,
I think/feel we would all like to think we could do all things on our own. However, I belive we are interdependant, and the sooner we realize this, the better for all of us:>)
  • thumb
Dec 14 2011: Thank you for asking!
    What am I grateful for....
    • The heater on my feet, and the electricity to run it. Growing up I was cold pretty often.
    • A husband on his way home that is still my best friend, with new stories to tell, after 26 years of marriage.
My parents haven't liked each other through the 50+ years together.
    • Two daughters that are beautiful, smart and funny, that hang with us.
They are doing homework now, challenging and pacing themselves.
    • A roof over my head, food on my table, despite the growing debt to keep it all going.
I am technically in the 1% but it sure does not feel like it.
    • And most of all - for my art ability that gives my life a purpose and direction
and the love around me to fuel my journey.
    • thumb
Dec 20 2011: My pleasure to ask Zofia, and also my pleasure to read your response:>)
    • thumb
Dec 20 2011: I'm sorry but I had to laugh about the parent comment! MINE TOO!/MEE TOO!
      • thumb
Dec 23 2011: Zofia and Valerie,
I had a challenge with the "parent issue" as well, and I'm grateful for the lessons, which lead right into your discussion Valerie..."How would we treat each other if we were not controlled by a need to be right?"

I learned two very important, valuable lessons from my violent abusive father, and unconditionally loving mother:
        1) It is not necessary to be right to the point where we constantly argue, confront, violate, demean and belittle others in our path.
        2) There is SO much more power in respect, kindness, compassion, empathy, unconditional love:>)

I am grateful to have learned these lessons early in my life adventure:>)

Dec 13 2011: I am grateful for the window pane fogging up when I pressed my nose against it this morning to check if the sun was out there to greet me. :-)
    • thumb
      Dec 13 2011: Nice image Helena:>)
My windows are frosted, so it would be a little chilly to snuggle my nose up against the window.
I'm grateful to be INSIDE, rather than OUTSIDE at the moment:>)
      • thumb
Dec 13 2011: Ha, ha, ha...I don't think I would've been as daring with frost about, a quick peep from the bed well wrapped up in my duvet would've been enough...We are still enjoying a nice temperature of 18 degrees Celsius here so luckily my nose didn't get stuck! :-)
        • thumb
Dec 16 2011: Helena, my dear one,
I want to share a bit of information I learned as a wee small child.

The nose or any other soft tissue of the body will not stick to glass. It can be fun to lick the snow and ice off the window pane...for a small child of course:>)

Never, NEVER, try to lick the snow and ice off the metal parts of your sled. All the soft tissues of the mouth WILL STICK, it is painful, and not a pretty sight!

I'm grateful to have learned this lesson by doing it ONLY ONCE!!!
      • thumb
Dec 16 2011: Ouch!! I'm feeling your pain just imagining the sight...
As a child we once had two inches of snow for a day and it was such a special occasion that we got the day off school so we could enjoy it, fortunately we had no sleds...Note taken my friend. :-)
        • thumb
Dec 17 2011: Thanks Helena...it healed...like most wounds can, with loving attention...I'm grateful for that!It snowed here during the night...I'm grateful for the lovely, white, bright blanket of snow this morning....also grateful that it will improve skiing:>)
      • thumb
Dec 17 2011: Ah, the power of love..the things it can do!

I am already picturing that white bright blanket of snow and it looks so beautiful...I am grateful for the power of imagination and I am grateful I can engage in conversation with you, Colleen.

        Enjoy the skiing! :-)

Jan 6 2012: I was very greatful today that I can take people's critiques about me without making them personal any more. That I am becoming more and more positive being.
  • thumb
Jan 2 2012: Today I was lying on our sofa in the living room, looking outside through the big picture window at the bare trees and the sky behind them and thought to myself, "this view is something I take for granted; every day it changes." Every day, through that picture window, I notice the change in the weather, the wind, the seasons; I see the every day comings and goings of the natural world as it happens outside my window. I must remember to not take that daily gaze out the window for granted. It enables me.
    • thumb
      Jan 5 2012: I wholeheartedly agree Jim,
It's very important to not take for granted people and things...even if we see them every single day...they are gifts which I am grateful for:>)

Dec 31 2011: I am 13, and I have a very close relationship with my parents. In fact, my family friends recently went through the loss of their father, who I was too very close with. In June, another one of the fathers in ANOTHER family friends' family died also. I feel amazingly lucky to have my parents alive and well, as they support me and make me the confident person I am.

      • Jan 2 2012: Cold spell here. Car dead when I turned key this morning. Brief panic. Turned key a few more times and it started. Called car guy. Shocked at price of new battery, but knew I needed it. Drove straight to car repair place. Sitting here now waiting for car. Starter needed too. This will cost me a lot of money. Not too concerned. Glad it's just money. Anyway, it will motivate me to win the lottery this week. Yeah, that's what I'll do. I am grateful that money is the only issue and that I am alive, have good credit and room on my credit card to absorb this expenditure, healthy, sentient and optimistic. Glad I have ted.com to pass this time while I'm waiting for my car. Life is sweet.

    Dec 31 2011: Finding TED -

It is the beginning of a new year (2012) and I was reading a post from Matt Cutts and he did a video on Ted about 30 Day Challenges. This was inspiring, then I watch the "Alberto Cairo: There are no scraps of men" .

WOW - I am grateful for finding TED
    • thumb
Jan 1 2012: TED is grateful for finding you as well Bob...wishing you all the best for the new year:>)

    Dec 31 2011: Dear Colleen,

On this last day of 2011 I am grateful that I can look back on a year that has been filled with blessings. I feel grateful for having had the opportunity to experience a wide range of challenges that have brought color to my palette of emotions. I am very grateful to have dealt with them lovingly and compassionately to the best of my ability. And I am aware that these blessings are all part of my life, as a work in progress.
However hard it may be sometimes to feel blessed in the middle of a challenge…the fact is you always feel proudest of yourself afterwards for having faced it and for having dealt with it as best as you could.

Furthermore, looking back over 2011, I feel grateful for this TED forum. It has offered me a place which resonates with my spirit and my view of life, a place where I feel ‘heard’, that adds to my experiences and challenges my points of view.

To you and all TEDsters reading this conversation: May you feel blessed in advance for all you will experience in 2012. And for all of us: May TED live a long and happy life :)

      Jan 1 2012: Dear Astra,
On this first day of 2012, I am grateful to look back on the year before, and look forward to the new year, which, as you so insightfully say...brings "color to our palette of emotions", and is always a "work in progress".
      Brasa:>)

      Jan 2 2012: Astra,

      Best wishes to you!

I am thankful for your insightful contributions, your openness, and your sense of humor (I still look at your old posting from time to time, it doesn't get old :-)

So, did you give up on new year's resolutions because it didn't work last year? May be this will help you feel better:

A new year's resolution comes in one year and out the other one.
      Have a great 2012!
      • thumb
        Jan 4 2012: Hi Karina,

Thank you for the wishes and for the kind words.
With regard to the resolutions.....well, in a way I did give up on them, meaning that I have stopped making New Year’s resolutions some time ago. I just take it day by day throughout the year. Not waiting until the end of the year to come up with good intentions. Because I experienced that resolutions can be very rigid and some room for flexibility is necessary (your quote was spot on :). Like the day before yesterday.
I vowed, when confronted by a request that requires an immediate answer, to (respectfully) ask some time to think about it before giving an answer. What prompted it? A late night request by a friend to go on a boat trip the next day. Not much information was given but I spontaneously said yes. As soon as I did my memory kicked back in and remembered all the things I still had to do the next day (a really long list) and I started regretting my quick answer....especially since my friend (she’s a sweetheart but can be quite chaotic) provided the vital details about the trip in bits and pieces over the next hours. That’s gruesome to someone who likes to be well-informed and well-prepared. I couldn’t back out anymore so I said to myself ‘What the heck, just go and have fun’. And the thing is....I did. I had a great day and lots of fun. (Sending you a picture of the New Year’s ‘bath’ at a mud bank near the sea...which my friend also forgot to tell me about :).
And so I had to reassess my previous vow into: Be open to reassessing a vow and ....be more spontaneous :)

        Have a fabulous 2012 too.
        • thumb
Jan 5 2012: I also take it "day by day throughout the year" Astra. Good intentions can happen anytime, and as soon as I feel something needs to change in my "self", the process begins:>)

Dec 30 2011: Wow!! Such insightful musings in terms of being grateful - I would like to add the following in that I am grateful to my mother - who was a 'stolen' generation person in Australia and therefore didn't have a mother to teach her - and her graciousness whilst gently guiding me through life's cycle to have a full and satisfying life. Although there were many low points in my life, the high points more than made up for them...
    • thumb
      Dec 30 2011: Hi Edward,
I'm grateful that the high points in your life made up for the low points...sounds like it's about balance?
    • Dec 31 2011: Edward, you made my day a little more wonderful. Thank you for sharing this thought.
  • Dec 30 2011: I'm grateful for life, I'm alive, I can walk, I can see, I can move, I can hear, I can talk, THANK YOU GOD, FOR ALL THAT I'M AND I HAVE IS BECAUSE OF YOUR LOVE, MAY I ONLY USE THE GIFT OF LIFE TO LOVE BY HELPING ALL THOSE THAT I CAN, LET ME BE A MESSENGER OF GOOD WILL AND BRING HOPE BY SPREADING YOUR WORD TO HUMAN KIND.

          Dec 29 2011: Dear Eduard,
I am not fooling myself about anything, nor are the people on this thread who have responded to the topic..."What do you have to be grateful for today?"

I am aware of your unhappiness because we've had very long discussions about the fact that you do not believe happiness/gratitude can exist. My heart goes out to you for your sadness. However, the topic of discussion here is "What do you have to be grateful for today". If you do not have anything to offer that is on topic, I respectfully request that you do not taunt others because of your belief that happiness/gratitude does not exist.

With all due respect, and a sincere wish for your well-being, and the well-being of those who choose to respond to the topic. Thank you for removing your comments that are not on topic.

I'm glad we are using our freedoms and other resources to have the positive impacts we are having on each other and the rest of our contemporaries. I look forward to meeting you face-to-face one of these days.
Looks like ours will be the generation that finally figures out the simple formula and implements our findings to co-create a healthy, prosperous, happy life for everyone on Earth. Sure is going to feel great for all of us. We could succeed in accomplishing this simple, logical, positive goal within the next 387 days. Anything positive is possible. HAPPY RIGHT NOW to you and to all of our contemporaries.

I think I just have some really great friends and it took me years to get here. They're all like this, spontaneous, aware and we are a happy bunch too. It balances out the pain and disappointments in life. Even in my darkest days there is just so much to be grateful for, but like you say we take so many things for granted and forget how precious it is. A card and photograph came from India from my orphan children I sponsor in Kesavaram and that made my Xmas special. My g.friend also gave me this Indian elephant trinket not knowing about the poor children I sponsor as I tend to keep things to myself and it was a deep moment. Like confirmation that I'm on the right track! Thank you to TED for letting me share this with you all :-)

  • Dec 30 2011: My gratitude resides in: Just for "Today" living one day at a time and taking one baby step at a time, I am happy because I lived in the moment. I experienced some old-fashioned retro joy Op-Shopping with a Buddy. We were able to get into the 'girls talk' and laugh with ourselves and about ourselves. We talked about fashion, our mothers, the men in our life, other peoples ideas and the way they expressed themselves. I found myself in deep conversation with my girlfriend Chris, nodding as I identified with her feelings and ideas and at other times infectious laughter took over. We were both connecting and our joy spilled out affecting other people, some of whom were negative, but given over to our laughter and joined in. First we went to Good Sammys, the clothing store and then the bookstore (of course) we both have fresh minds and a desire for new ideas. Then we took a break at the Tropicana cafe where healthy food and some old fashioned Soul music, (entirely appropriate for the spiritual experience we were having) was in high gear. So we ordered the same lunch (of course) and then we took a long strong stroll through the carefree Xmas cheer of Fremantle's sunshine filled streets. We bought Peruvian beans in Oxfam and mineral water in Coles and had another cappuccino and a chat. It's one of the best impromptu days out I have had! Sometimes life is better when it just happens.... Food for thought. THIS IS WHAT I AM GRATEFUL FOR!

      Dec 30 2011: Dear Petrice,
You mention elements that are often taken for granted (girl talk, laughter, fashion, mothers, men, shopping, stopping at a cafe, music, lunch, walking, sunshine, cappuccino, water, etc. etc.) and you created a beautiful, loving event, or "scene", which brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart simply reading about it!!!

I am very grateful that this kind of energy is contagious, and as you insightfully say, impacts everyone around you. Thanks so much for the wonderful day...I am grateful to have the opportunity to share it with you:>)

Your lovely story reminds me of a day when my son was about 9-10 years of age, and he informed me that I could no longer hug him in public. He also wispered in my ear..."you can only do that when we're at home mom because the guys give me a hard time about it". As soon as he and the other guys got over their discomfort (which took awhile) my son allowed us to hug in public again:>) I am very grateful for hugs:>)

Dec 19 2011: I'm grateful that I have two friends who have taught me drastically different lessons in the past 6 months or so. The first one has shown me what I don't want to become. He's a couple years younger than me and is already obsessed with moving through college as fast as possible to start working at a high-paying job that comes with a prestigious, equally high salary. He believes material goods will make him happy and will do what it takes to buy products from top designers to try and buy respect from those around him.

The second friend has shown me what it's really going to take to be happy. This kid comes from a damaged family that doesn't have a lot of money or material wealth. He's one of the smartest, nicest people I've ever met. I realized when I was hanging out with him at a party this summer that being surrounded by friends and family that were there to celebrate a milestone with him was all it took for him to be truly happy. This really impressed and inspired me. I try and follow in his footsteps, and take this approach to life now. Regardless though, I'm grateful I had both of these two polar influences to show me two drastically different ways to find happiness.

Dec 17 2011: Dear Colleen, Thank you for the kind words and for remembering. At this stage in our journey, it seems that the creative spark, the spark of love... comes from synthesis, connecting the dots to discover the wholeness that is the foundation of our awareness. We have many capacities as human beings, some we have forgotten and some that have become distorted. Now it is time to discover and remember them all, and balance them to generate a new awareness... these days I call this "developing a skill in modulating awareness"...

I will be writing that story but it will come from the depths so I have to wait for it to appear... when it does, I will submit it here or at some discussion that you have initiated. I like your idea!

Have I mentioned an extraordinary book that has helped me in the synthesis? So many things have come together into a delightful awakening as result of studying this book...

    Dec 12 2011: Dear Colleen,

First of all I am grateful for knowing your beautiful soul. And just the fact that you ARE. You provide a constant of love and serenity, and you are a beacon of positivity I can always warm my soul to. So thank you for providing this moment for many to reflect and thereby having people create positive energy for themselves and others.

In being grateful today there are of course the ‘usual suspects’: I’m happy to be healthy, thankful for the shelter and appreciative of the abundance of nourishment for body and soul.
And then comes along your question which starts off a ripple effect. For example, pondering your question, I think about how grateful I am that I have a gate that opens/closes automatically so that I don’t have to step out in the rain to do so. At the same time I am actually also grateful for that same rain because it makes my plants happier…and that of course makes me happy…and me being happy makes me more patient and friendly in the ever increasing holiday traffic, so the people who I gave right of way also became happier (even if for a moment, but hopefully more :) …and I see them being friendlier in traffic and giving other people right of way, and maybe they will be more loving to another person and so on and so on.

Come to think of it….that’s an idea for research and a great TED talk: The power of a ripple. And you should be the star in it :)

    Have a blessed day,
    Astra

      Dec 12 2011: Dear Astra,
I am very grateful for your kind words. The ripple effect is indeed powerful, and you have demonstrated it so well...makes me smile:>)

I'm grateful for smiles, and that is another thing that causes a ripple effect. Perhaps gratitude and smiles are intimately connected? They both seem powerful...both seem contagious...joyful...meaningful ...healing...and just plain fun!

Dec 12 2011: Colleen, thanks for asking...

I am thankful that I AM, in the first place. Thankful that I have been given a chance to be part of this game of life (I love to play), to seek in others the pieces of the puzzle I need to make sense of mine, and hopefully complete it and understand it.

I am also sooooo thankful for the people I meet in the process of exchanging pieces, and for the pearls of wisdom they share. Among all of them, most thankful for the children and the elderly, the wisest of players.

I am thankful for the amazing beauty of the gameboard itself, mesmerized actually. I wish I had enough time to see it all.

Oh, time! Thankful that I have enough time to play and look at the details of the board and exchange many pearls of wisdom and develop friendships.

I am thankful that I remain playful through the years, despite pieces lost, pieces broken and pieces stolen. Thankful that the joy of playing means more to me than the final score, and that my team grows as the game progresses.

Thankful that time is not up yet ;-)

Dec 12 2011: At the monemt I'm grateful for joining TED and a rich world of ideas.
Yesterday - for being able to sit having a backache.
Mostly - for my people and my creativity - both define who I am.

      Dec 12 2011: Hi Dalia,
I'm grateful for you joining TED and bringing more rich ideas to us:>)

I understand a little about the backache. I just got up and out of bed, and usually the back is not working so good in the morning, so I focus on everything that IS working well. At the moment, I'm grateful for the wood, which is generously given to me to provide heat for my home, the warm cup of coffee I'm drinking, the computer that connects me with so many wonderful people around the world, and TED:>)

    Dec 11 2011: Hello,
I am grateful for my life and being aware of so many things. I am grateful to have the chance to experience the world, to hear/watch/experience stories about different places and cultures, beings, happenings, thoughts.

I am grateful to understand diversity and be open to accept it.

I am grateful I can live and carry a clean conscious and a word of ease to other, a positive attitude and dynamic in this messed up world. I am grateful for the willing I have to reflect on my (and other) mistakes and learn as person and an element of Nature.

    Thank you Colleen

  • Jan 9 2012: I guess what I have to be grateful for this weekend as opposed to 'today', is the people in my life. I am a student and leaving home is always hard. I miss the luxuries of home and my loving parents, but it is always a treat to be welcomed to my second home where I study by my good friends. Even though we hardly spoke during our respective vacations, we reunited as if we were never apart at all.
    • thumb
      Jan 10 2012: Hi Joshua,
In my experience, good friends can be apart for a long time, and I'm grateful that when we get back together, it is as if we have never been apart....good insight on your part:>)

Jan 8 2012: Since gratitude is a feeling wouldn't words get in the way? Gratitude can only be an individualized experience and words can not be used to describe and individuals experience in truth. Can you describe the flavor of strawberry to someone who has never tried one? Or do you just say "Oh just eat one!" And can their words describe their experience accurately?

With that said, I take gratitude as the feeling for what is coming and thankful for what is here and now. Therefore, I am grateful for tomorrow and thankful for today-what else is there?
    • thumb
      Jan 8 2012: Hi Dan,
I agree that gratitude is probably an individualized experience, and there may be many levels of gratitude, the outword manifestations of gratitude may vary with individuals, and the feeling itself may vary. So, gratitude is subjective? The only way I can describe "strawberry" is to say it is delicious, delectable, delightful and very enjoyable. I can only describe it using my thoughts, feelings, preferences and the words I have to describe what I feel about strawberry, or gratitude. I understand that some people may not percieve it the same:>)

With that said, I agree with you regarding gratitude...thankful for what is here now. For me, it is an important part of the foundation of life that helps me move on to the next adventure, grateful for the lessons learned:>)

I joined just now because of this coversation. Thank you for this question.

I am grateful for the amazing Christmas we had and I am grateful this year my mum was able to enjoy it with us as she was very ill for the past 8 years suffering from a disease called Trigeminal neuralgia (think I spelt that correctly), the operation was succesful and I was very grateful to have her home and well and smiling. This reminds me don't fret on the small stuff, family is the most important thing in life without them I would be very lost.

Jan 5 2012: We all have so very much to be grateful for.

I love this question because within the question itself is embedded a hidden message. It says - "We all have something to be grateful for today."

Every day it is a choice to give and express to others our love, our dreams, our compassion.

I am so very grateful for the opportunity to share.

I am grateful for my life.

I am grateful for love, for the ability to love and to receive love as well.

I am grateful for my feelings, for they show me the directions I must take to live a fulfilled life.

I am grateful for my family, for my friends, for people.

    I am grateful for being.

Thank you for your post. A truly inspiring question.

    Jan 5 2012: Colleen,

I have a lot to be grateful for today and everyday. I'm so glad you asked this because today was very difficult. I'm not currently employed and my job search has been exceedingly stressful. Putting things in perspective with this question means a lot, and helps a lot.

I have health, family, friends, my dog, and a genuine desire to be successful and to make a positive impact in all of my pursuits. I'm grateful for having a positive attitude, the ability to articulate my feelings and observations, and I'm grateful that I know of so many good people that recognize in me my true character.

This is a great question, and again...it's helped me very much.

    Kindly

    Eric Silverman

Jan 4 2012: Hot off the press!!!! (thanks Coleen ;-)

One more HUGE thing to be thankful for!!!!

I am thankful that my daughter (a college freshman) just got accepted for a study internship with the Grameen Foundation in Bangladesh. She has a heart and compassion that are hard to match, and I know she will do great things with this opportunity.

If you didn't hear about him, Mr Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Peace Nobel Prize, has transformed Bangladesh with an innovative socio-economic model that today empowers over 8 million of poor women and families, and in his 70's, he continues to work passionately with world leaders to elevate the dignity of the poorest all over the world.

Please, take a moment to watch these two short videos, and you will not ever be the same:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C3XQ3BTd4ohttp://www.nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=146

Her next step is to find funds for travel expenses, let me know if you have any links or ideas, after all, brainstorming together -and soul digging- is most of what we do in these conversations.

I'm grateful I live in a small, quiet, crime-free town in Maine, a place I moved when I retired. I'm grateful that this town has so many good people willing to volunteer to make it better, despite hard times for some. I'm grateful for all the young people who are willing to demonstrate for this country and try to right what is wrong. They are so brave to stand up against the federal government and all the corporations who are afraid their bottom lines might be affected.

I am going to take the opportunity, like so many others have, to thank you for being You. I hear your voice when I read your entries. I perceive the tact with which you reply to others comments. I am grateful you are such a wonderful role model for others, especially those who are fragile, and timid.....like the person who deleted her comment the other day after you replied to her.......your choice of words always leaves me feeling good about having read them.. Thank you:)

Thank you for being you, and sharing the gift with me:>)

    Dec 12 2011: I am grateful for...
    - My breath.
    - Appreciation.
    - Gratitude.
    - Existence.
    - Longing and fulfillment.
    - The people in my life (including all of you.)
    - Food.
    - Hunger.
    - That I can see in colour.
    - Seeing the people I work with grow and enjoy themselves.
    - Thinking.
    - Sleep.
    - Death.
    - Humour.
    - Lots of other things - sunshine, music, challenges, etc.
    - And something I do not wish to identify.

        Dec 12 2011: Hi Colleen,

Hmmm ... I didn't think I would have to explain why I am grateful for these things.

        It's an interesting question.

Gratitude is one of those things that just "bubbles" up ... it's "there" and responds to whatever it responds to.

But seeing as you have asked, let me consider why I am grateful for hunger.

[Pause ... really ... I had to take some time to get in touch with "why."]

For one thing, I actually enjoy the feeling of hunger. It has a vitality to it.

Hunger also makes the anticipation and experience of food exquisite.

That's all I came up with ... but I do know I like being hungry.

          Dec 12 2011: Dear Thomas,
You don't "have" to explain anything...I was just curious about hunger, and I understand what you're saying....thanks:>) I agree..."gratitude is one of those things that just bubbles up"...when we allow that to happen:>)

          Jan 8 2012: Mark,

"Where I come from, random strangers don't ask me that, know what I mean?"

Well, TED is different, here people care. Sit back and just read, let it play in your ears until you feel safe knowing that yes, there are those who care about total strangers and spend time brainstorming and networking in order to help them.

Jan 9 2012: What does it hurt you that someone you do not know ask you how you feel? We are all full of ideas, but generally they start coming up when you openup to yourself, and the first step to that is in gratitude!
What can you be happy with yourself for? Maybe contributing by openning up in this conversation. the answer you give may give better ideas to others as to what they can do withh their day or life.

Nothing is ever insignificant, they might mean nothing to us, but they have their importance to others.

See, out of the 1000s of conversation subject on TED, you've chosen to give a hit to this particular question.

Don't worry, feel at ease or would I say, feel at home and let go...

Smile and be grateful we care about how you feel today!

GREAT effort in trying to embrace Mark. Unfortunately, if a person cannot percieve gratitude as an important part of the life adventure, It is his/her loss...it is a choice.

          Jan 8 2012: Mark,
It is fun and interesting to care about total strangers because some of us believe that we are all connected, and the energy that is produced is beneficial to the whole. My own gratitude, combined with other people's gratitude is a very strong factor in the adventure of life.

          Jan 9 2012: Mark,

Tell us which part of the world you are from and we'll list at least ten total stranger to your family who have contributed positively to your life. Maybe then, you can feel what gratitude is.

When you go at then bank for a service, whether the customer service agent smiles at you or not makes a difference or not?

It all depends on you... the way you want to see it. Noone knows everything for finite, we keep on learning during our whole lifetime... but we never learn as polémists...
