Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where/that _________ ?

This question is inspired by the amazing TED Fellow Candy Chang. As I was revisiting her work and thinking about her public art project that asked people to complete the statement "before I die _____," I began to wonder what people might wish for the global community.

Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where...coming out as LGBT is as common place, easy, and accepted as stating your hometown.

  • Dec 3 2011: before I die id like to live in a world where I could be proud of being human not ashamed.

      Dec 3 2011: Sasha . . . you're already there . . . on many levels: Beethoven, Ghandi, Sagan, etc., etc.
    • Dec 6 2011: Oh my gosh Sasha! You hit it! BOOM!
We, as humans have so much, to be proud of, shame is a part of it.
We are destroying our own existence, yet continuing to make strides! BUT at the same time time, destruction as we know it. I loved your comment! It is a sad comment, yet so true. If no one out there believes this, look around! Respect!!! :)
      • thumb
Dec 6 2011: I don't think it's bad if we feel ashamed to be a human, but we should be brave to go on at the same time.O(∩_∩)O~
        • Dec 6 2011: I agree, we should take in how much we have hurt the earth, ourselves and each other, but be willing to mend it and make things right on all those levels.
        • Dec 7 2011: Hi lulu, is it wrong?
Sasha wants to feel! It is not a bad human feeling. WE should be in shame.
This human wants, before she dies, to feel it. How come humans, can not understand the harm? :) Good comment!
      • thumb
Dec 7 2011: hi O(∩_∩)O~my english is not very good,i don't think i can totally understand your reply.i didn't mean that you are wrong,i just wanted to express that we human can feel both pride and ashamed,it's nothing.it shouldn't to be blame even we feel ashamed.maybe we should accept all sides of one thing."existence is the reason",so i think all can be undertaken, but not denied.what you think??(*^__^*) ……
        • Dec 8 2011: Hi lulu! My apologies, I agree with you! You are great! Your English is fine! Humans are human. We have hurt each other, our land, our existence Once again, my apologies! :)
      • thumb
        Dec 8 2011: that's ok.never mindO(∩_∩)O~everyone thinks in his way.and i am so happy that you affirmed my english ability,thank you (*^__^*) ……
        • Dec 8 2011: No worries! :) It is all cool! YOUR ability is groovy!
          New word! :)

        Dec 8 2011: I'm very happy to hear that,Thank youO(∩_∩)O~

Dec 2 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world that wasn't as selfish. Right now, the vast majority of people are greedy and we focus more on making money than helping others. We rarely listen to others and try to solve their problems.

We teach our children the golden rule -- treat others as you wish to be treated and yet we treat each other poorly. We need to start teaching children to think about if they were in someone else's point-of-view.

Oprah gave a thought provoking speech. Here is part of her finale speech:

"I've talked to nearly 30,000 people on this show, and all 30,000 had one thing in common: They all wanted validation. If I could reach through this television and sit on your sofa or sit on a stool in your kitchen right now, I would tell you that every single person you will ever meet shares that common desire. They want to know: 'Do you see me? Do you hear me? Does what I say mean anything to you?'

"Understanding that one principle, that everybody wants to be heard, has allowed me to hold the microphone for you all these years with the least amount of judgment. Now I can't say I wasn't judging some days. Some days, I had to judge just a little bit. But its helped me to stand and to try to do that with an open mind and to do it with an open heart. It has worked for this platform, and I guarantee you it will work for yours. Try it with your children, your husband, your wife, your boss, your friends. Validate them. 'I see you. I hear you. And what you say matters to me.'"

I'm the president and founder of Restoring the Meaning of Education. RME wants to validate: students, teachers, professors, politicians, journalists, and the list goes on.

    • Dec 3 2011: That is the perfect answer!! Two thumbs up!
    • thumb
Dec 3 2011: To which definiton are you referring: regarded as showing a lack of intelligence, perception, or common sense; or
      irritatingly silly or time-wasting?

Dec 3 2011: I believe it has been proved that the two most common elements on earth are hydrogen and stupidity.

Dec 6 2011: We love people more than we love stuff (and we spend our time, money, and energy accordingly).
  • Dec 3 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where values mean more than money.
    • Dec 4 2011: "Some people are so poor, so poor, that the only thing they have is money"
I read that somewhere, and it stuck with me....I use it often when speaking about materialism and loving money and possessions more than loving people. :)
      • Dec 5 2011: Oh that is nice, really nice. Reminds me of some people with advanced degrees in something or other sneering down upon the less educated, not realizing that the formal "education" is all that they have.
  • thumb
Dec 3 2011: Before I die, I would like to live in a world where every child started from a level playing field so that the world would benefit from every talent for the betterment of humanity.
  • Dec 3 2011: Before I die, I would like to see the world, where people do not hate each other in the name of religion, nationality, language, and they do not search for reasons to hate others.
  • thumb
Dec 2 2011: every human being on the planet who is willing to work 40 hours a week, can support a wife or husband, and 2 children, while owning a small piece of land, or apartment, and having a vehicle... preferably electric.
    • Dec 3 2011: Hi and how old are you? David, you may have picked the ultimate wish list!! ( besides mine, of course) With Respect to You! :)

  • Dec 5 2011: Before I die, I would like to live in a world in which people are not killed in the name of religion.
  • thumb
Dec 4 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where everyone finds his or her reasons to live in this world.
We've been wasted too much time on things we are not interested in, so I just want to find a reason, which is meaningful enough for me to live in this world.
That is not to say if I cannot find that reason I will pursuit suicide anyway, I mean I want to choose the reason I live in the world.
    Tha's all.

Dec 4 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where government will not peculate their citizen. Educations to empower our mind and our future generation (not for profit). Ideas and projects are being pursuit for the health of our planet and welfare of human kind. Knowing the nature of human beings greed and power are always surrounding us, if we don't come to realize we are the problem there will never be solution. Human tends to blame others or things other than themselves.
  • Dec 4 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world that was inhabited by a higher form of consciousnes, that transcended the venality of the current species of humanity, so that we could all live and prosper without war and the selfishness of the current version of the species.

  • thumb
Dec 3 2011: the foundation for peace and harmony built already.
  • Dec 3 2011: Before I die, I would like to live in a world where all people understand that they are interconnected with everybody else. Every action by every individual somehow affects others sometimes helping them, sometimes hurting them, and sometimes by not changing them either for good or bad. I don't want this to become a world where everyone agrees on everything because some conflict disagreements is critical to the advancement of society. I want everyone to hold their own beliefs, but act in a way where they take others into consideration as a part of the decision making process.
  • Dec 3 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in the world where i have seen a foundation is built for carrying on a movement to make this Earth a fun place to live in for everyone ....... Our Earth as One world one nation!

Dec 3 2011: Where a lot of basic things are fixed. One thing that really bothers me is that countries collect income tax. If you tax something, you tend to get less of it, not more. Why can't we switch to consumption taxes that raise the same amount of money but encourage savings, let people keep all the money they earn, and are far less complicated? I'm a progressive Democrat, but I'm a big supporter of the Fair Tax (www.fairtax.org). If we can get it started in the US, maybe the idea will spread to other countries as well. Good question!
    • thumb
Dec 3 2011: A tax that encourages savings by discouraging buying would slow the country's retail activity, right? We may first have to figure out how we provide full employment in the resulting economic slowdown. A hard sell these days, though I'm personally convinced that a less frantic economy would be a good thing.
  • Dec 3 2011: That Cares about the future of the next generations, caring about values, ethics, human rights and sustanable development .

    • Dec 4 2011: I ran across this video and thought it brought up some reasonable points....in an entertaining way.

      http://youtu.be/eScDfYzMEEw

The earth has natural cycles....humans are the ones that need to change. The earth has been around so much longer that mankind....I really don't think there is anything we can do to it, that it cannot fix on it's own. Like the video says...The earth is not going anywhere......WE ARE.

Dec 8 2011: Hi Corey, thanks for your question. It is tempting to start a wish list, and it is great that you have prompted me to start thinking and remembering many of these things. I'll throw one as my response:

Before I die I'd like to live in a world where people do not see each other as a potential customers to whom something must be sold, but see and treat each other as the only real chance they have to survive

    cheers
  • Dec 8 2011: Hey and hi!
Communication! Wow, learning a lot from you folks.

Dec 6 2011: Before I die I wouldl ike to live in a world where everyone is appreciated for who they are, what they know and that everyone will share their knowledge with those who need it. Also, I would like to see a world where people aren't questioned for questioning - but assisted in gaining the knowledge they seek.

Dec 6 2011: where everybody understand the meaning of being human and not just stay as "human being".
  • thumb
Dec 6 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where Hate has become obsolete. Any hate at all. I'm not saying that everyone has to get a long with each other, and go about hugging their neighbors every time they see them. That wouldn't be so bad though. I'd like for everyone to at least have enough respect for their fellow humans, that even if they cannot identify with someone based on race, religion, nationality, age, sex, orientation, they can at least relate to them because we're all human. We're all stuck on this planet (for now), together.
  • Dec 6 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where: money and bartering don't exist. Where people actually trust each other, because we should. A world where we don't believe it is in our nature to be competitive.. A world where the leading institutions of the world are not built on greed and secrecy..

  • Dec 5 2011: Before I die, I'd Like to live in a world where we are not restricted to one planet.
  • Dec 5 2011: I'm glad you enjoyed the quote. But I liked even more that you shared the connection you made. Thank you:)

Dec 5 2011: Why would I like to live in any other world then the one I am living in right now?

I would like to live in a World None other than the One I am living in Right Now... With all its shortcomings.... Struggle for Supremacy over one another, where killing each other for us on the basis of Cast – Creed – Race – Religion has become a Norm..

And I would like to live in this world coz it allows me to Think.. Think Solutions for the problems that are plaguing the Human Race Today... Whereas A Perfect World - A World Free of Policing.. Free Of Struggle For Pwoer.. For Domination Over One Another would not be a world that would allow the Creative Thoughts to Germinate!
  • Dec 5 2011: Before I die, I would like to live in a world where no little boy or girl goes to bed hungry and wakes up not knowing were they are going to get there next meal. I'm only 19 but I'm already sponsoring 2 children in the poorest of the poorest countries. There is so much children hunger in this world and even in our own country and all the government can do is fight among themselves and turn a blind eye.
  • Dec 5 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where Americans actually choose accountability for their ideas.

  • Dec 4 2011: Hurry! Let us hurry to the peach grove
Before the breath of morn gives harbor to the chatter of birds
And the knells of treacherous commerce call me to my obedience.
    Awake from your slumber!

    Here in the peach grove,
where the herons drink from the mouth of their reflection
we shall build our quaint crib of cockle burrs & jellybeans
and make love & eat Ben & Jerry's all day without getting fat
& drink Cointreau & order shit we don't need over the Internet.

Here in the peach grove, we shall build our brave new world
where there's real justice and and suicide bombers wake up to a harem full of seventy virgins but their cocks are blown off and they don't eat pussy.

Here in the peach grove where the traffic lights are synchronized and everyday is a four day weekend in a leap year of Sundays
and where there are as many raisin nuts inside the cereal box as there are on the pretty picture on the outside

and where you answer a piece of Nigerian spam mail and actually receive a certified check for 40 million dollars

and where people who drive while using cell phones crash and burn on the second ring (and on the first ring if they're driving an SUV); crash and burn along with the scumbag tailgaters who honk their horns at you the nano second the light turns green

and where gas prices fall to a dollar a gallon but everything's in walking distance anyway all cars have been beaten into ploughshares -- except for Ferraris which are transformed into gelato

and where Martha Stewart goes back to prison and just stays there for life
and where George W. Bush gets fucked in the ass by a porcupine or an escaped Texas Death Row inmate

Hurry with me to the peach grove where the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.

  • Dec 4 2011: Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where... there is no longer a need for any sort of policing. I know that is a tall order, and will probably never happen, and I am accepting that this will not happen before I die(LOL), but it would be nice to come true. So to be more realistic, since this is probably the case, I would like to live in a world that is more economically, ecologically, and philosophically sound with its activities before I die.
  • Dec 4 2011: My last comment was in response to Mary Munoz' response to my earlier comment. I don't seem to have the knack of the "reply" button, I guess. Sorry.
  • Dec 4 2011: That is so true, so true! But there don't seem to be very many born to this world lately who know what that means. There is not even honor among thieves today... well, unless it has to do with pledges to Norquist. Thanks for the comment... a nice reminder of what is really makes us rich. (I'm not saying money isn't a handy-dandy commodity, of course.)

Dec 3 2011: By stupidity I mean lack of common sense and reasoning. There are people who will stick to certain ideals or ideas just because they think they are right, or they are in charge. They will not change their opinion regardless of the proof or evidence shown to them. They will still stick to their opinion because they don't want to admit being wrong.

irritatingly silly: not really, If its in comedy then its used in entertainment. This can be used to release stress.
If its a grown man acting like a teenager with no sense of etiquette or manners, then that would fit the kind of stupidity that needs to be cured.

Lack of intelligence is alright because there are many types of intelligence. When one person might lack one type, they might succeed in another. Like social intelligence or emotional intelligence vs logical intelligence.

Time wasting is not stupid really. Every one has wasted time on purpose, and everyone has acted stupid on some level. Its only natural i guess.
  • Dec 3 2011: Hi Mr. Corey! Interesting question! ( love it!)
Before I die, I'd like to live in a world where... humans did not hurt babies, children, adults. Mostly babies and children.
    Oh what is LGBT? :)
  • Dec 2 2011: Brian,
Religion is already joining with science, but I don't think religion will be around much longer... Sorry I'm breaking your "living in harmony" method :p
  • Dec 2 2011: I would like to live in a world where we can unify religion and science into one theory. This would make the world a much more peaceful place. I would like a world where the simple concept of living in harmony isn't so hard to follow.
  • Dec 2 2011: That everyone beleives that we can do, we really can do the best ever!!!!!!
