Are creative people more successful in the workplace?

Does being creative lead to more success in the workplace? Do you earn more? Are you more cooperative with team members? Are you more liked by your boss? Do you get the promotions?

Creativity is an essential part of the workplace because it not only fosters innovation, but research proves that it encourages cooperation among employees. Interview questions at hugely successful companies such as Google require applicants to think outside the box.

However, research by Harvard University also proves that creative people may be more dishonest. There is also evidence that creative people cannot work together in groups and tend to be very independent.

I think, however, creative people are more successful in the workplace because the benefits of being creative outweigh the costs. After all, the companies with the best ideas will bring in the most money.

    Nov 29 2011: I'm curious . . . how were these creative people defined? Problem solving aptitude? Intelligence? Artistic interests?

    In any event, I think 'creative people' are more likely to be unhappy in factory lines and coal mines. Then again, some of our most touching Appalachian music come from these very experiences.

    In the business world, whether or not creativity works may come down to one's manager. If that manager is a narcissist, one's creativity will get one fired.

    If one considers oneself to be a 'creative person', I believe one must work hard at finding and maintaining the right environment. Then, one will be successful. And probably more successful than the average person.
  • Nov 29 2011: Perhaps if the workplace requires creativity, e.g., the advertising industry, the movie industry, a creative person will be more successful, assuming the "supervisor" does not limit the creative person's work.

    Nov 29 2011: There is no one, single "workplace".
    Some workplaces operate successfully on rigid methodologies free of innovation. Such atmospheres are not fertile ground for creativity, in fact they are toxic to it.
    Creative thinking will be valued in a creative workplace, but discouraged in a "stay inside the box" workplace.
