What do you think TED is? (almost in a word)

I think TED is one of the most symbolic and meaningful things in contemporary intellectual culture. Culture is something hard to say in a word, but TED definitely shows us something about it. So I wonder what do you-TEDsters think TED is.

* Yes, I know this kind of questions may be like theories, not practical solution, sorry :-) , but I do think this is going to be a meaningful try to understand contemporary intellectual culture. I'm on my master's paper and I want to know more about it by examing how TEDsters think of TED. So I would like to take your answers as references for the academic use. Please excuse me about this, and thank you for any kinds of participations and advices!

Nov 30 2011: I believe TED is an meme ( /ˈmiːm/[1]) is "an idea, behaviour or style that spreads from person to person within a culture."[2]
A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate and respond to selective pressures.[3]
