global platform for a bike-share program

What if there was a global-social platform that allowed individuals to log their bicycles with type and size into an online database organized by location.

Other folks could log in what size bike they ride, the ride purpose and search the location they are traveling to.

Once connected and secure, contact details/ pickup locations, etc. would be shared.

How would it work? Small join fee to cover administration costs.

Why do it? Traveling with a bike is more then difficult when flying. However I have heard many people talk about wishing they could go for a ride when traveling for business.

Imagine, this would also be a gorgeous way to meet locals with a similar passion!

I’d lend my road, city,-bike or mountain bike to someone who needed to ride and next time I travel (on monday) all I need to pack is my riding shoes and a helmet.

Would it - could it work that soon?

Nov 20 2011: picking the bike up and dropping it off would not be that easy, especially since most people have employee jobs and need the time to do the hand-over.
